Bad tent, leaked first time it was in the rain. Front fly does not open in the middle making it very hard to open and close from the inside. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

"Poles are much to be desired" 2010-06-29
By bsdavidson
I bought this tent for a family camping trip. I really like the concept of the tent and the price was right.

There is not much more I can add to the review detailing the whole tent from setup to verdict by JPaint21. I absolutely agree with the review.

I just want to add an issue I have with the tent.

- The Poles

During my weekend trip we did not experience rain/winds of any kind. When we took the tent down the poles were bent at each connection point. I'm sure if this tent experiences any wind at all there is a high risk of damage.

"Great concept with a few flaws" 2010-04-27
By JPaint21 (Alabama USA)
We purchased this tent in March and have camped out in it twice now, once in the backyard just for fun and once for a week at a time. We really enjoy this tent and it is exactly what we were looking for. Here are my findings:

Setup: Very simple. It's basically a double "dome" design, with two sets of two long poles that cross over and form two connected domes. The stakes are metal rather than plastic, although they do bend somewhat easily in hard ground. The rainfly has one long pole that goes down the center and is easy to get up and over the tent. It could be tough to set up by just one person, but if you need a tent this big, you've probably got more than one person there to do it. There are plenty of ties, clips, and velcro to hold the poles to the tent and the rainfly down on top.

Space: This is a VERY roomy tent. There is more than enough room for most people to stand up in it, and you could easily fit two queen size air mattresses in it and still have plenty of room for lots of other gear. There is a divider that you can hang in the middle and essentially make the back area a sleeping room and the front a covered sitting area if you want, or divide it into two separate sleeping areas.

Construction: The tent is well constructed, but does not have the usual "bathtub" fabric on the bottom. A ground cover/tarp is a must, since the floor is made of the same material as the sides. The rain-fly openings are somewhat of a hassle, since they can only be closed from the outside. The inside zipper also does not match up with the rain fly zipper, so it's a little more work to get in and out of the tent when the rain fly is closed than most tents are. The big openings on the rain fly have very good tiebacks though, so when you have them open they stay out of the way.

Weather: This tent vents VERY WELL in the heat. The entire thing is basically mesh underneath the rain fly, and there are big openings in the front and a smaller window in the back so the air flows through it well when it's all opened up. As for the rain, we sealed the seams on our tent before we went camping with it, and we did not get wet. There were a couple of seams that leaked a little that we're going to reseal, but they were small and in unimportant places. We did encounter some very strong winds on our trip, and we are working with the warranty department to get some replacement parts. The poles bent a little bit and the "pocket" where the pole in the rain fly hooks in ripped. These winds, however, were a part of a severe weather system and lesser winds have not caused any damage to the tent.

Verdict: This is a great family tent and provides lots of space and more than adequate shelter. There are a few design flaws, but they are nothing more than a small annoyance. If it is very windy, however, your best bet is to take the tent down.

"Great Value, Great Family Tent, Keeps Us Dry!!!" 2010-03-24
By Daniel J. Barberio (Florida)
I was a little apprehensive about buying this tent due to the number of reviews about it having water leak issues. I have to say that those reviewers must have done something wrong somewhere along the line. My family put this tent to the test the very 1st time we used it. On the second night it rained a solid downpour for eight hours straight. Not a fun camping night, but we did stay Very Dry. Not a single drop of water entered the tent. I did use about 3-4 cans of water sealer on all surfaces of the tent before use. The rainfly is a bit too small for the tent on the sides, but I just pulled it extra tight before staking it down and it did the trick. It is very easy to put up and I do it by myself in about 15 minutes, including the rainfly. Take time to seal the seams and other surfaces and you will stay dry. Overall a great, roomy, family tent!!!

"Another Great Product from Eureka" 2010-03-04

This is my second tent from Eureka. I've been using their 2xt for backpacking for several years.

This tent held up great through a weekend of thunderstorms. We were under tornado conditions and my tent held tight while other were blowing around the campground.

Very roomy. Easy to setup alone. Make sure you seal the seams good, like all tents.

By unclfstrmn (Minn)
great size for family camping, fit queen air mattress and 3 singles for the boys with some room left for gear. fiberglass poles I rate at just ok, small ones for rain fly broke after first use but they are way small so not overly supprised, looking for upgraded poles now and I'm sure it will be fine. Seal those seams, then seal them again when you notice a leak, ones you find it and seal it seams to be fine...

"OK, but there is better" 2009-08-09
By Robert I. Walker (Clearwater, FL)
We bought this tent after reading many reviews. I am an eagle scout and have experienced many tents!

The 1610 has Positives and negatives:

Positive:

1) Easy & quick to assemble, takes 10 mins, due to 4 Poles!

2) Good inner space, height

Negative

1) The fly-sheet poles on the entrance break on first use. I have seen other complaints of this, and unless Eureka changes the design, the tent is completely flawed.

2) The sides of the tent are not covered by the fly-sheet, and again a flawed design. When it rains, it seeps through the seams and zips. Yes, I used 4 cans, yes 4 cans of sealant, and it still rained in!

Overall, easy to use tent, ok in mild weather, but unless Eureka changes the entrance fly-sheet poles, and redesigns the sides, it is a flawed product.

 "Excellent in every way" 2009-02-24
By Mysterious Mr Wong (U.S.A.)
I sealed the seams as soon as I received my tent a couple years ago and have to say it's great in most every way. I was camping and up comes a huge thunder storm. 30mph winds and even the rainfly was left unharmed. The poles did bend a bit, as they are flexible to begin with, but the tent kept me dry and out of the storm for the first 4 days of my camping trip. I always use a floor saver as well so that not only does the tent receive more protection from rips in the floor, but it gives an extra layer of defense again ground moisture. Ventilation is great on the tent also but there is still normally some condensation within the tent each morning, at least in cooler weather anyway. I use a dual mantle coleman lantern so each morning I light it until the moisture has gone. I recommend this tent because I own it and have used it extensively. Best wishes to you all.

this tent is not what I expected. It appears far roomier and spacious than it really is. Also the tent is not square as pictured. It is more of a hexagon shape (with 5 sides) It is difficult to position an air mattress. YOu certainly could not fit 2 full size air mattresses in the tent! Would not recommend!

I would recomend this tent to any family. You can't find a better value. Set up is really easy if you have 2 people. The tent is very roomy though oddly shaped. I am 5'9 and I could stand up with a couple inches to spare. The is a rather large lip in the front of the main door I am not sure why they made it so tall its kinda a tripping hazzard for clutsy people like us. Overall were are completely satisfied!

"Buy this if you want to get wet!" 2009-08-04
By Unhappy Camper (Colorado)
Field and Stream tents must be the worst. I had cheapo Coleman tents that held up perfectly fine in rain.

This one started leaking after about 1 minute of heavy rain, at first usage the same day we bought it. The problem is mainly that the rain cover does not cover all seams and zippers, and that's where it leaks. The zippers on the side windows leak, the seams where the the little bags inside are attached, and the seams where the inside straps are mounted.

Whoever designs and manufactures these tents should be forced to spend a night in Smoky Mountain National Park during a heavy downpour. Bring a snorkel!

 "An awesome little tent!" 2008-07-22
By Shannon N. Folk
I bought this tent from a sporting goods store to take on an overnight camping trip. It was a last minute purchase because the tent I already had that I thought would be ok wasn't. I didn't even take this out of the box prior to setting it up it was so last minute. All in all, I have no complaints whatsoever with this tent. The poles are color coded-blue pole through the blue loops, green pole through the green loops, black pole for the rainfly. It went up in about 10 minutes with two people setting everything up. The inside was nice and roomy-four adults, a medium sized cooler and some backpacks fit comfortably. I am 5'4" tall and could almost stand up straight inside. The windows (3) were nice and big as was the door. There is a hook in the top of the tent for hanging a flashlight or battery lantern. There are side pockets attached for putting things like watches, glasses, or wallets, as well as cup holders and such that can be attached if desired. I didn't bother as we were attending a weekend-long wine festival-I figured we wouldn't care too much about cupholders :-) There was an attached welcome-mat type thing that you could leave your shoes on so no dirt would get inside the tent.

During our stay it poured not once, but 3 times, and not a drop came inside as we had attached the rainfly just in case. Like I said before, I hadn't taken it out to set it up or anything, so there was no additional seam seal or waterproofing on the tent and we stayed perfectly dry. I read reviews of other Columbia tents and saw complaints that their poles snapped, but we had no problem and it was fairly windy when it rained. I didn't care for the metal stakes that came with the tent. I had purchased additional stakes after hearing complaints about those as well but didn't need to use them. The ground was pretty rocky underneath the grass, so the stakes were difficult to put in without a mallet, but they remained in the ground, and the package came with more than enough to hold down the tent. Get a mallet and you'll have no issues.

I only spent about $100 on this tent, and it was worth every penny. I have other Columbia products (winter coat) and have had no problems dealing with their warranty department. They seem to stand behind their products, and if there was ever an issue with this tent I wouldn't expect to have any troubles with them. An awesome little tent, I say!

 "benefits and drawbacks" 2008-04-29
By The Delite Rancher (Phoenix, Arizona)
I purchased Columbia's North Rim on a hunch. At the time, there was not a single review of the tent anywhere on the Internet. Being newly released, this is the first review to report on the merits and issues with this tent.

The Good . . .

The North Rim is outstanding in many respects. It is a roomy four person tent. The use of space is efficient in terms of design elements such as shape and profile. There are few dome tents of this large a size; most tents in the four person and up range often choose comfort (straight walls) over designs that would better enable a tent to withstand harsh weather (dome). The North Rim has all sorts of nifty features like drink holders, pockets, fabric shelves and a port that can be used to channel an electrical cable. The zippers are supposed to be self-correcting. Relative to the set-up size, the packaged tent is surprisingly light and compact. Taking around ten to fifteen minutes, it is also easy to set-up and take down. That written, two people will make the job significantly easier. The poles are color coordinated to make assembly easy. Recent Columbia tents have received a good deal of criticism for coming with cheap bendy stakes. The North Rim comes with sturdy stakes that actually work. The tent is also attractive in terms of design and color. In all of the official pictures, the tent's green looks like an ugly lime. In real life, it's darker and more pleasing to the eye.

. . . the Bad and the Ugly

Okay, so after writing about the merits of the North Rim, why the three star rating? In a word: poles. I went into this assuming that the technology behind fiberglass poles had recently made great advancements, thus making fiberglass a viable design choice for a tent of this size. In the first night that I used the tent, two poles shattered. (Check out the customer images for photos.) While I didn't have an anemometer to measure the exact wind speed, it just wasn't that windy. It was a typical night in the Sonoran Desert. In fact, out of our camp, the $20.00 five and dime store tent had no problems. So while the North Rim appears to thoughtfully balance inside comfort with an overall sturdy design, it is not enough. Keep your receipt handy; it will be essential in getting replacements under warranty. Columbia was very cooperative in sending out replacements.

In addition to the initial camping trip in my home state, I've now used the tent quite a few times in Colorado, Nevada, Utah and California. On the nights when the weather was cooperative, the tent did well. After a couple of additionally windy nights, the tent has shown significant distress. A clip on the fly broke. (see picture) From chafing due to wind, the pole sleeves have worn through. (see picture) I wanted a high quality, larger sized tent and I was willing to pay for it. I figured that by getting a tent with Columbia quality, I would be safe. The North Rim is a beautiful tent with many special features. In the end, the tent seems to be made to keep an easterner dry and not help a westerner outlast the wind. This is a fantastic tent . . . provided that it doesn't get windy where you camp!

I purchased this tent late this summer after constantly borrowing a friend of mine's large tent. It has been easy to set up and provides great air circulation. I have not gone off on a trip on a rainy week-end so I cannot attest to the waterproofness just yet. The tent came quickly in the mail though and I am very happy with my purchase!

This is an excellent tent. We bought it to replace a Coleman tent and couldn't be happier. There is plenty of room inside for 6 adults. It is simple to set-up, my wife assembled it together in about 10 minutes. We braved one night in the tent with rain and 30 mph wind gusts and the tent performed flawlessly, no leaks! I highly recommend this tent.

"great tent for the price" 2009-10-14
By E. Scott
being first-time campers, this tent was very easy to set up and take apart. as long as you keep the tent doors closed after entering or leaving the tent, bugs did not get through. it didn't rain the weekend i was camping so i dont know how well the rain shield works. the tent overall is small compared to the product description. it does not fit 7 people-- it fits 4 adults comfortably with sleeping bags and without the room partitions, maybe 5 adults max. i find it very difficult to sleep 7 people unless its 1 adult with 6 kids. the entrance mat was a great place to put your shoes outside and not track in any dirt. i would recommend getting a tarp to place underneath the tent because the bottom of the tent got dirty and it was hard to clean when it came to packing up and leaving.

i would recommend getting this tent for a quick weekend camping trip.

We have only used the tent once since purchasing it, but overall it was an excellent purchase, was everything the information stated. It isn't as big as you think when you see the measurements, but still a good buy. There are five of us and we slept well with plenty of room for each of us. I would reccomend this product to anyone with a family wanting a good deal. The shipping was quick and customer service has been great. Definately thumbs up on this one!

 "Picture is somewhat misleading" 2009-09-04
By John Danley
The advertisement is somewhat misleading. It says it is 10' x 18'. And it shows the front of the tent. However, the tent base is not a rectangle. The front is 18', and the tent base is sort of an offset pentagon. It only has 116 square feet. I should have caught that in the description near the bottom of the page, but I didn't.

My old tent is 10' x 18' tent that I bought from Sams Club years ago, and it looks very much in the front like this tent does. It is 180 square feet. And I was expecting the same in this purchase.

Kudos to Amazon's return policy however. I'm returning it, and I'll pick something else out.

"Great tent and water proof" 2009-12-30
By Cheryl A. Murphy (Missouri)
Bought this tent at Walmart while camping in South Dakota. Our old tent almost collapsed from the rains and literally flooded, it was like a river. Our son was using a 9x7 Coleman tent set up next to our big tent and didn't have a drop of water in it while we washed away. Made me a believer. We used this tent for myself, husband and daughter, had plenty of room it in, the back zipper flap is great for bringing in an electric cord so we didn't have to fight an electric cord every time we came in or out. Definitely a two person job to put the tent up, but no big deal. Very reasonably priced and would buy another one. Durable, well constructed, I say water proof, not just water resistent. Good windows in it, nice ventilation, you can stand up in it without hitting your head in the middle of the tent. Will use it again this summer in Colorado - can't wait.

 "Great tent!" 2009-11-27
By D. Graves (Clearwater, FL)
I set this tent up in about ten minutes with the help of a friend. It was very easy to do. I bought this for myself and my five kids. We set up two queen airbeds on either side of the tent and there was room for a third in the center. The tent is very spacious and comfortable. The weather was great so I can't speak to how it would do in the rain but the rain fly covered the tent sufficiently so I'm sure it would have been fine. I was very happy with it and my kids thought it was great!

A fairly standard large tent. I've used this on a few camping trips and it has been comfortable for our group of about 6 adults. If we were doing longer stays it may be better as a 4-5 person tent when gear is being stored inside. The high ceiling and ease of setup have been greatly appreciated.

This tent is GREAT! IT'S HUGE! Used it about 5 times this season. This thing is easy to set up, keeps you nice and dry, and looks 100% better than the picture shown when it's setup. Other reviews say it's heavy, but we never really thought about it.I can carry it without any problems and i'm not Miss muscles. You will need another bag though...we bought a big green duffel bag for it and it just makes us love the tent more cause we can fit everything in it without a problem. Excellent price, Excellent product. Looking forward to using it next season too. My 2 and 4 year old boys zip it up and rumble for an hour before bed, this tent takes it with a smile.
