The Taurus 2 is a 2-pole freestanding dome tent that is enhanced with 2 doors and 2 vestibules, which is probably why it's been our best selling tent model for the last several years. We use aircraft alloy aluminum poles that are strong and lightweight. Assembly is really easy with the tent clips that just snap in place over the poles. The polyester fly and nylon floor are urethane coated, with factory sealed seams for maximum weatherproofness. The 2 doors make getting in and out of the tent much easier, especially in the middle of the night when you need to take a quick "break". You also get 2 vestibules (one over each door) that you can use for extra gear storage. The vestibules also serve as automatic guy-out points when the weather gets a little nasty. The fly buckles to the tent, offering a much more secure attachment when compared to elastic cord. We have added vents to the fly on our 2006 models so you get even better ventilation. Mesh roof vents increase ventilation and improve star gazing. Mesh storage pockets and a gear loft are included for organizing your stuff. Stakes and guy ropes are included.

 "Very good tent!" 2010-05-09
By E. A. Hoffman (Central VA, USA)
I have been away from camping for over 25 years and wanted to get back to it. I researched many tents before deciding on this one. This tent is very well made. It is fairly easy for one person to put up and take down. I have used it in 40 to 90F weather with better results below 80 F. It withstood moderate rain very well with no leakage. It has more than enough room for my type of camping (usually me and my gear, one or two nights, not far from the Jeep). Four good size adults and gear would be a little crowded. As mentioned in other reviews, for backpacking it is on the heavy side, but straps very well to a MOLLE main ruck or other external frame pack. Overall, I am very pleased with this tent and would recommend it to anyone looking for a sturdy all-season tent.

 "Eureka Assult Outfitter 4" 2010-05-03
By GB Maynard (Reisterstown, MD)
I really wanted to like this tent, but it has too many negatives. The tent is well made, and sturdy. Lots of room and I can stand up in it, more or less. Here's where Eureka drops the ball: Who ever thought that pole sleeves were a good idea in 2010? Haven't you heard of pole clips? This tent is an absolute beast to erect by yourself. Poles catch in the sleeves and it takes the strength of Samson to get the pole tips in their sockets. Poles are difficult to remove when taking the tent down. Even so, I could put up with the pole sleeves, but the real deal breaker is the entry flap in the fly. Open it to enter or leave when there is water on the tent, or God forbid, when it's raining, and water drips, or runs, right in the door and on your gear or the floor. Or on the tent door which doesn't open to the side, but to the floor. The zipper on the fly leaked on to the tent door and through to the tent floor when everything was buttoned up in a storm. There's a nylon strap to anchor the rear vestibule to a tent peg that is attached to the tent with plastic clips. This thing is just begging to be lost. Tent pegs are plastic and cheap aluminum, which bent while being pushed in by hand. This is not a well thought out tent! And it's heavy. Car camping only!

 "Strong, rugged tent" 2010-01-26
By B. Hill (too close to Birmingham, AL USA)
This is one strong, rugged tent - probably due to its military roots. I have used this tent when there was hard rains and straight line winds. Several of my fellow campers had their tents buckle, but this one barely moved, and I stayed completely dry.

Seen some argument from other reviews on whether this is a backpacking tent or not. If you're an ultra-lite hiker, then this is not the tent for you. In fact, at 13 pounds, for most hikers this would be a bit heavy for a single person. But it sleeps up to four average size people so you can split the weight. If you're car camping or not hiking far (hunting, canoeing), I wouldn't worry about it.

You'll want to buy more stakes, it doesn't come with enough for the guy out points, and the stakes that come with it are flimsy.

Pros: Holds up well in high winds. Sheds water well. Fairly easy to set up. Condensation has not been an issue for me. Lots of guy out points. Two doors and a vestibule at each door (big one in front, smaller one in back). Vestibules hold plenty of gear. Good tent in cold weather.

Cons: Somewhat bulky for a single person if you are hiking. Stakes that come with the tent are weak, plus not enough stakes for the guy lines. It can be hot in the summer, I had to experiment with the vestibule openings to get decent ventilation.

Overall, a good tent, I'd recommend it.

 "Great motorcycle touring tent" 2010-01-05
By John T. Gardner (San Diego, CA)
It's Marine Corps heritage sold me. It is very sturdy in wind (you can useup to 10 tie-downs) but just two or four are normal. Both tent and poles fit inside one of the side cases on my Honda ST-1300. I also use a compression sack to get it very small. Four people in it would have to be very friendly, but two and a kid, or just two are perfect. There's enough height to get your pants on standing up if you don't play for the Lakers. It's well made and things fit. There is enough overhang over the front door to leave it open in anything less than a driving rain. I do wish the front door attached at the side or had a center zipper. Being attached at the bottom takes some getting used to. I found one for $275 with some looking.

Hoo-Rah!

"Great tent, too bad about the plastic window" 2009-07-16
By Fred (Toronto)
My family camps a lot and we got tired of cheap tents that fall apart after the first season and leak the first time they get rained on. Four or five years ago I splurged and invested in this expensive tent because it seemed durable and was good for 4 seasons. We would never use this tent for backpacking; it is far too heavy and bulky for that.

This has been an excellent tent. When the tent was new getting the first pole in was so difficult that I was afraid it would break, but now that the tent has been pitched dozens of times the first pole goes in easy. The tent has been water tight, with no need to apply seem sealer to it. We have camped at the ocean in the fall and still never had a problem with condensation inside the tent body. We have pitched it on sharp gravel multiple times and with out a ground cover and the floor had not been damaged.

The tent body is very durable and it the stitching is high quality. I like the side pockets and the optional loft. The heavy duty zippers never get stuck.

The roomy vestibules are great for storing gear and keeping the family dog dry. Due to the size and configuration of the front vestibule it is hard for me to reach the zipper. We have started using the back door as the main door because it is easier to get in and out of. I had really long arms it would be easier to reach the zippers in the front.

I love this tent. But there is one problem, the lame plastic window. I never cared about having a window in the fly sheet. The window is too cloudy to see out of and if I really need to see out I can just unzip the fly sheet a bit and still stay dry thanks to the roomy vestibule. But my real problem with the plastic window is that it has started falling apart. The plastic window had several holes in it when I unpacked the tent this summer. My tent in no longer waterproof thanks to this stupid plastic window. I'm going to see if Eureka will fix the window. If not for the problem with the window I would give this tent a 5 star rating. Would I buy this tent again? Yes if not for the plastic vestibule.

I have called Eureka (Johnson Outdoors) about getting the window repaired. They said that it might be covered under warranty but they will not replace the window, instead they will sew a piece of fabric over it. Also I have to pay the postage to sent it to New York State for repair and it will take Eureka 4-6 weeks to repair my tent add to that a week for it to reach New York and another week for it to be mailed back and the entire summer will be gone. I am very dissapointed!

"Great Tent for the Price!" 2008-08-31
By H. Howard
My boyfriend and I went camping on a very rainy weekend and stayed nice and dry. Perfect size for two people and their stuff. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because you can't cover the windows of the fly. People can't see in all that well though so it isn't much of an issue. I just thought it was an odd design choice.

I am well in to my second season with this tent and it is awesome! It packs up small and is easy to take along. I bought this for use on motorcycle camping trips and it has been everything I expected and more!

A few weeks ago I had set up in one of my favorite campgrounds. The forecast was for thunderstorms and it was right. We had got wind and rain like I haven't seen in years. I had staked and tied the tent down and it held up beyond belief. We got 5 inches of rain that night and the only wetness in the tent was from me coming in.

This is a great product!

 "Wonderful tent" 2007-06-26
By Zack J (Tucson, Az)
This is a great tent. My wife and daughter and I fit into it with a TON of space to spare, it packs up nicely, and is super easy to set up. When I started looking into tents I had two major criteria: 1) that it be a dome style, 2) that it have two poles only, preferably aluminum. This tent met my requirements and has been a joy to set up and use. Just last night my wife set it up alone in less than 5 minutes.

I purchased some 6 mil polyethylene to use as a footprint under the tent. Alps Mountaineering recommends that you purchase theirs, but I found the stuff cheaper at a hardware store. Using a footprint will definitely extend the life of the floor of your tent.

I would recommend this tent to anyone looking for an affordable 3 or 4 man tent.

 "Lots of Room-Great Bargain!" 2007-06-19
By Jennie Meier (Midwest USA)
I just bought this tent a couple days ago and received it yesterday. I set it up in my backyard to check everything out and ended up sleeping in it. It is large enough for a queen size airmattress if you are using it for car camping. I was surprised at how lightweight it is and the amount of ventilation. I love that the door windows zip shut so you have added privacy and more control over ventilation-makes it more of a 3.5 season tent. Will have to take this hiking sometime to see how it works out-nice thing is the easy 2-pole setup (and it really is easy).

"This Is the first tent i've ever fit into!" 2007-02-17

I bought this tent as a Christmas present, and it has been one of those purchases where, as you use it you are constantly surprised by new great things about it.

So far, i've only had the chance to use it once, in the dead of winter, which it really isn't designed for, but the tent held up fantastically and was extremely practical and easy to use, if not very warm.

I'm a pretty tall guy, and this is the first tent that i've had plenty of room to stretch out in, and still have room for all my camping gear. The vestibules are great, but there's no way to cover the plastic windows. SO i'll have to rig up somehting to cover them for changing and stuff, but otherwise they are very handy.

It's a great tent, and not just some ripoff "mountainering" tent.

Its worth it.

Bought 2 of these for backpacking scouts. Is lightweight and packs easily. Easy to set up. However, how they can say the width is 6' is beyond me. My husband who is 5'8" has to sleep diagonal. Good for smaller scouts.

 "It works" 2007-03-14
By Mario R. Faria (Tallahassee, FL)
What can I say, I took it camping on a cold night and it worked, no condensation (I had the vestibule cracked). I bought seam sealler and sealed it, a must do in all tents. I also sprayed layer of water repealent spray can, found in local sports shop. I haven't used the tent in rainy conditions, but I know since I took my time and prept it the Wenzel tent will do nicely in rainy conditions. (Just don't be lazy and prept your tents)

It was easy to wrap and carry on my camping bag.

Easy to set up.

Easy to break down and wrap up.

It comes with pegs.

Nice cool organizer thing in tent.

It rocks.

My recommendation, well for the price, Buy it!!!

Later on when I save much more, about $150 I'll buy a nicer tent, but I can't really afford that now.

 "Not very reliable" 2007-02-07
By Joshua D. Haney (Hagerstown, IN USA)
This tent was given to me as gift from my wife. I've taken it on two trips, one a three night backpacking trip and the other an overnight car camping trip in cold weather. On the first trip the condensation was terrible! Every morning I woke up to find my sleeping bag wet. Luckily I have a very good sleeping bag! On the second trip one of the support poles shattered while I was trying to set up the tent! Save your money and spend a bit more to get a better tent!

 "Fair-weather Tent......." 2007-01-20
By Tina Chi
It's a fabulous sunny-weather tent, realtively cozy for two persons of average size and weight....but when it rains it POURS. It LEAKS through every cross-hatched weave of thread it's made of. You'll scream like I screamed, curse like the sailor you will be whilst drifting about, angrily wondering why you decided to let your desire to save a little dough has literally drowned you in sorrow.....and it wasn't even a heavy rain. Alas.

 "Good" 2010-02-10
By Kosher Chan (Fargo)
1. It is a little heavy so better for car camping.

2. As others have mentioned it can get pretty warm in the sun.

3. I was in Wind Cave national park with this tent during a severe storm warning. When it started to rain, I got inside, put in my ear plugs and slept all night.

The next morning every one else in the campsite seemed to think they'd just barely survived, tents had been shaking, leaked full of water, etc. But I was completely dry in this tent and felt perfectly safe and sturdy.

"Eureka Alpenlite 2XT One Person with gear tent." 2010-02-05
By Steven P. Brick (Taos, NM USA)
I did a lot of shopping before deciding to purchase this tent at Amazon.com. Amazon had the best price and has very timely shipping. I got the tent in two days via UPS as told. I unpacked the tent and read the directions. Assembly was easy and straightforward. I took my time to learn the new tent. I spent most of the afternoon setting it up, opening the vents inside, rolled out my large sleeping bag to see how that fit in the tent. My sleeping bag takes up most of the available floor space but does not touch the sides or ends. The zippers are of impressive quality. The rain fly and tent bags I received are bright orange. The box shows a yellow rain fly. The 7000 series aluminium tent poles are made by DAC according the box the tent came in. This tent has a lifetime limited warranty. There were plenty of high quality guy cords included and I tied them all in place rolled up so they are ready for use when needed. The guy points are stitched very heavy duty with heavy metal rings to attach the cords to. The stakes that came with this tent are light weight aluminium and not very long. I would prefer different stakes like titanium and maybe a bit longer than what came with the tent. This is an expedition tent and should be equipped with stakes suitable for use in snow packed conditions. 8 more stakes will be needed to stake out the guy lines. Those stakes are not included. The floor seems very thin and a footprint is obviously needed to prevent damage. The feature that impressed me most with this tent so far is the quality of the zippers. I would recommend this tent to a friend. A lot of tent for the money at Amazon.com. Thank you! Steven

 "Good Little Tent" 2008-10-06
By Mark W. Johnson (Moyock, NC USA)
I use this tent when cycling and it is a good tent for one person and his/her gear. I just returned from a ten night trip on which it was pitched/taken down daily, and it performed well, never leaking or even getting damp inside including two nights of steady, heavy rain. The multiple vent system prevented condensation during many hours inside. It does tend to get a bit warm during hours in the sun. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good little tent at a somewhat lower end price.

Two kids or one adult and a child fit great. Very easy to put up. My Scout is 11, and he did it first try.

"Best tent for the dollar" 2009-02-14
By H. M. Johnson III (L.A. California)
I am a GEARhead. I own or have owned over 30 tents plus all the fixings... Both backpacking as well as car camping. This tent as far as I know did not exist when I rewalked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer through California. Had it, I would've of used the 1.5 model. After getting home and settling in from my walk I ran across both the 1.5 and 2. I own both now and can say they both are killer deals in their price range. And yes I own SD, REI, Kelty, Coleman/Exponent, Moss, Slumberjack Bivy (I used) and on and on and on... I have tried many while hiking in the Olympic Mountains in WA. I would put this model(s) up against any listed. If you have money to burn yes there are some that may be better at lasting a little longer but I question that too... and yes you can go lighter in weight... but by going lighter you'll give up a lot of comfort and the security you get knowing that you have a shelter that will handle just about anything Mother nature throws at you. Alps other models I'm not sure of size VS. weight and the value VS. dollars. But this model is absolutely great.

Good luck on your hikes,

Hersh
