 "Garbage." 2009-12-31

"Dim, fragile, and poorly designed" 2009-12-07
By Samuel Van Oort
Received as a gift, and found 3 major problems soon afterward.

1)The lantern is very dim, even at the highest setting -- it's no brighter than a 25W bulb or a weak flashlight

2)Battery housing and knob to control brightness are very fragile -- my knob is broken and permanently at one setting, and I have had to glue the cracked battery housing together twice.

3)Light is not well dispersed -- it goes in a bunch of tiny spots outward from the LEDs, and you get yawning dim gaps when you hold it up.

All in all, an inferior product -- my next lantern will be a classic mantled naptha lantern.

 "Emerson 12 LED Lantern" 2008-09-15
By Xavier Ducats (Seattle, WA)
The lantern is bigger than I thought it would be, but not as bright. The light is harsh. The batteries should last far longer than the similar sized incandescent lantern I have, but I'd rather have more pleasant lighting unless it was an emergency backup.

At least it doesn't hiss like the old Coleman gas lanterns.

 "Just get one already." 2009-12-19
By Pearson
Ok so everyone on the planet likes the orbit. The Apollo is better. Those legs are really handy. If your out on flat ground they give the light a much longer throw without searching around for a rock or something. The light that it puts out is, as everyone says, easy on the eyes. Our den is about 30 by 15 and if the lights go out this light is enough to keep the boogy man away. Its not much bigger than the orbit and is a lot brighter. Ok so it is a little heavier. That's fine I'll skimp on something else. Do I really need that toothbrush? :-) Both lights cover the switch when closed which is really smart. I don't think you will be disappointed. P.S. I own several little lanterns of various types, and this is the one I reach for every time.

"Exactly what I was looking for - New High Power LEDs" 2009-11-10
By Shawn Sapp (Denver, CO United States)
I love this lantern. I bought it for camping, but have found a hundred other uses for it around the house. I typically use NiMH rechargeable batteries and dim it to half power for most uses, but good to have the higher power for when you need it. I'm glad I got the 3W LED model instead of the 1W LED model. I'm tempted to buy another one because it has been so useful, I'd like to keep one in my truck.

 "Good Light, too expensive" 2009-09-16
By G. Pochet (State College PA)
I bought this with a giftcard. If it was my own $$, I would not spend $40-$50 on it. First, it is just plastic, except for the 3 legs. I would think if you would drop it, knock it off a table, hit it off a tree while holding it, it would break very easily. This light is only 9" tall WHEN THE LEGS are extended, so it is not more than a medium size flashlight with legs. With that said, it is a very bright light. It folds up to a very compact size for packing. But I have other lanterns/flashlights that do the same thing and are more durable that cost 1/2 this price.

 "Outstanding, Simply Outstanding!!" 2009-09-13
By OrangeCrush (Farmington Hills, MI USA)
LED's are simply amazing and they have caused nothing short of a revolution in the lighting sector. Just go to any high end lighting store on the internet and browse some of the new LED lights and you will quickly understand what I mean by revolution. Some of the lights now available are just downright amazing. Lighting has never been this much fun. While LED lights for camping aren't quite as exciting or revolutionary as some of the stuff being introduced in the home lines, its still worthy of excitement especially for people that are used to old school candle lanterns.

The Apollo from Black Diamond is certainly one of the best options currently available. The Apollo is a 3 watt light which can achieve a light intensity of 50 lumens. The design, with its frosted globe and dual reflectors, eliminates any sort of glare even when your looking right at it. Its really an ingenious design. You simply pull up on the housing and pull down the 3 sets of legs and your done. There is a dimming switch so you can adjust the overall output of the light which is great for extending battery life. The bottom of the legs are coated with a very sticky black rubber thus giving the legs amazing traction. Overall, when extended with all 3 legs down, the lantern is 9.5" high. It takes 4 AA batteries or you can purchase the NRG Rechargeable Battery Kit which is what I definitely recommend. I actually purchased 2 of them so I can backpack with an extra battery. Last but not least it has a battery power indicator with green, yellow and red LEDs which display the amount of battery power left. When using the NRG rechargeable battery The indicator shows the charging status of the NRG battery.

While 3 watts may not sound like much, trust me it is, especially when your in pitch darkness. The Apollo will easily illuminate a 4 person tent. At 11 ounces you wont even notice the weight in your pack. These are available in both black and white versions. Black Diamond also makes a 1 watt version called the Orbit. Its basically the exact same design, just smaller and with 1/3 the overall light output. They are perfect for those times when your going solo as they easily illuminate a 1 person tent or even if you want to read in a bivy sack.

Of course you can use these for other things besides camping. We purchased 3 of the Apollo and 3 of the Orbit lights to use for emergency lighting in our house. We usually lose power in our house at least 2-3 times a year during the stormy summer months. These lanterns are absolutely perfect and much safer than candles. We use the orbits to light up our main hallways and use the Apollo's for our main rooms and bedrooms. We have already had to use them twice for such occasions and they were perfect, vastly superior to what we used in the past. We did have a really big and super bright lantern that we used for such occasions however it took 8 D batteries so it wasn't cheap to keep it operational and it weighed like 8 pounds. I definitely prefer the Apollo's and so does my wallet.

Bottom line - these are outstanding lights. They are designed extremely well, put out plenty of light, are lightweight and are easy to carry around. The optional rechargeable battery is a huge plus as I for one HATE wasting money on batteries. IMO, this is now the best camping light on the market. I cant give this a higher recommendation.

"The Little Light that Could" 2009-12-26
By Mr. K (Arkansas USA)
A tremendous lantern, especially if you're backpacking with a buddy and stuck inside a shelter during a rainy night. My brother and I were caught in a rain storm one night on the Ouachita Trail; fortunately, we were at one of the shelters, but a fire was out of the question. This little thing lit up the entire shelter and lasted for about 4-5 hours on re-chargeable batteries. In retrospect, it would have lasted a whole lot longer had I used lithium batteries instead. The light is diffused nicely, not too bright and certainly not dim. Very light-weight. An excellent choice for a backpacker.

"WanderingBlindly Philippines trip test of Orbit (5 Stars)" 2009-12-18
By Joseph C. Bogo (Avella, PA USA)
This is an outstanding product. I took one on my first trip to the Philippines, so it proved sturdy enough to travel from Pittsburgh to Minneapolis to Tokyo to Manila to Davao to Cebu to Manila to Tokyo to Detroit to Minneapolis to Pittsburgh without ever tapping out the way that a bulb light surely would have, given all the bumps and hard knocks of my travels.

During the 46-day trip, it came in handy during numerous Filipino power outages, and all on the included set of AAA batteries. It's still kicking just fine with those same batteries, sitting on a shelf in our breezeway awaiting our next southwestern PA power outage. I just bought a bunch of AAA Lenmar R2G Low Self-Discharge rechargeable batteries and a LaCrosse BC-900 charger, and I'm officially convinced that this Orbit will be the "Highlander" of battery lanterns. As in, unless you cut off its head, it just won't die ;)

The diffused globe is awesome, because it glows with a soft light that is easy to look directly at instead of the harsh glare that comes from lanterns with clear globes. It really does kick out plenty of light, too. As tiny as it is, it's amazing how much eye-friendly, quality light this little lantern generates. As with any light, the darker the environment, the brighter it appears.

As my Filipino friends and I were riding in the back of a big pineapple truck travelling between Surallah and Cotabato on a moonless night, they decided that it was going to be too dangerous to continue at night in that part of Mindanao. So we stopped to spend the night in an old church, and the pastor immediately fell in love with this light. Of course the power happened to be out at the time, if I remember correctly. I'm gonna buy another one from Amazon and give it to him as a gift if I ever pass by his way again.

I'm also going to buy the Black Diamond Apollo AA lantern and see first-hand the difference in brightness between it and the Orbit. According to the specs, it seems like the Orbit is rated at 45 lumens and the Apollo is rated at 50 lumens. On paper, that doesn't seem like a very big difference. I'm going to take both of them on my next trip to the Philippines, and I'll surely do a post on my blog in which I compare them to one another.

If anybody would like to check out my blog, it's WanderingBlindly. I try to post my thoughts about all the products I take with me and use during my Philippines adventures.

I give the Orbit 5 stars, but I didn't see any choices to click on next to "How do you rate this item?"

"Lots of light for a small lamp!" 2009-10-19
By Kevin Cross (Lancaster, NY)
I purchased this lamp for my fall camping trip to replace one that was 3 times the size & weight. I was amazed at the light output, far superior to my older lamp. It worked perfectly, was easy to hang in my 2 man dome tent and didn't have the glare typical of other lamps. The compact size & weight make it ideal for backpacking. The only minor problem I found is that the on/off button can be hard to find by feel in the dark. Perhaps a raised surface or different texture on the button would solve that problem. Overall, it's a great lamp and highly recommend it for camping/backpacking.

Customer Buzz
 "Tiny, bright, long-lived" 2009-10-19
By Omar Siddique (Ellicott City, MD USA)
This tiny lantern makes a great carry-around light source: bright, light, long-lived. I kept it with me for most of the Burning Man 2009 festival.

It survived undamaged, the first set of batteries never ran out (from sporadic use for 5 nights), and it was small enough that I didn't feel burdened by it. The Orbit isn't cheap but is the smallest/lightest unit in its class that I could find, with a reasonable lumens rating.

My only quibble was that some of the fine dust of the Black Rock Desert got inside the clear plastic part. There's no way to clean it out without disassembling the unit (haven't tried yet)

The only thing lacking in the design is being able to direct the light at a specific spot, as with a flashlight. I'd love to see a modification, maybe some way to open up the end while in its "closed" position, to direct light more narrowly.

Highly recommended.

 "Black Diamond Orbit Lantern" 2009-10-12
By J. Pierce (Fullerton, CA. USA)
The Orbit is a great step up in LED technology. I have the e-gear/Brunton LED lights and the difference is amazing.

The e-gear/Brunton light are harsh at eye level.

This bright, diffused, white adjustable light is perfect for a tent. Top clip is 2 piece so it will hook on any attic or loop.

It can be knocked off if rocked hard. (One man bivy is tight quarters)

Adjustable output can be dimmed so eyes can adjust to night time with moon light or a night light for children.

For a camp light use the Apollo version. It will light up a nice 20ft circle when suspended overhead and dark.

Couple it with a good headlamp like the Mammut Lucido X-Zoom (Like having a search light on one's head) and leave

the gas lantern at home.
