"Survived Windy NC Beach WX!" 2010-09-23
By IbeforeJ (NC)
I did extensive research on pop-up tents for our beach trip to Topsail Beach, NC and the Instent Max was, by far, the best choice. I have two boys- one 3.5yrs and one 5 months, so it was imperative that we had something to shield the little one from the sun. Despite the reviews that stated the tent collapsed with only a little bit of wind, we had no issues with our tent and we encountered some pretty windy weather (we were at the beach in between two hurricanes, so we were getting interesting weather patterns.)

As far as securing the tent, I didn't do any drastic- I did tie a loose knot on top as suggested in other reviews, packed the side pockets with sand, and put the stakes in on the 4 corners. We also kept at least one chair in there for added support- not that it needed it, but just in case. So, even with minimal support, the tent performed just as well as I had hoped.

Also- set-up and breakdown was a breeze. One minute up and one minute down. You can't beat that!

Don't hesitate on this tent- it's worth every penny!

"Easy up and easy down." 2010-08-31
By M. V. Damiano
Since both side open up, you get all the breeze you want. One issue is that when the sun is up over head, there is little shade inside with both side down. I wish the zippered wall had a way to turn into a canopy and not a floor mat.

Took it to Myrtle Beach in July and the wind was strong. It held up just fine. The sides of the tent have pockets to fill with sand to weight it down. The stakes hold the top cable supports just fine. There are two screen windows with covers that zipper over them. The pull cable on the top to erect the tent needs to be tied into a bow. It will stay without the bow, but changing winds might wiggle the connection enough to make it collapse. Never happened to me, just saw reviews were it happened to others.

 "Big Letdown!" 2010-08-28
By shawn senavitis
We used this beach shelter 3 times. The 4th time one of the screws fell out of one of the plastic brackets that support it.

My daughter and I stuck a sea gull feather through the screw hole and luckily it held.

By the time we got home, another screw was missing.

My husband put new screws in.Ill keep extras in the bag and hope nothing else brakes on it.

We really liked this tent, its ashame it didnt live up to my expectations.

 "It was JUST OKAY" 2010-08-05
By Innocentlilmiss
I received this item in a very timely manner. That would be the extent of my pleasure. The item appeared used though I purchased (or so I thought) a new item. It had dirt or rust on the bottom of the legs. There was a hole in two separate places on the tent. Being a somewhat optimist and out of time to return and reorder from a different company I decided to take the tent to VA beach. It is true that you have room for two adults (If you both have small chairs and sit in the middle, provided the wind is not pushing the sides in). The wind issue was my biggest gripe. I took others advise and tied a knot in the top to prevent collapsing and to my surprise it didn't collapse. The flip side of that was that the beams (or whatever you want to call them) bent along with the tent. They didn't break but appeared pretty close. It did take two to put it up when the wind was blowing ( and not that hard I may add). By the time all this happened I just took the darn thing down and used the umbrellas we already had.

P.S. I would like to add the that set up and break down are essentially good with just one person (provided there is no wind).

"Not good for a windy beach" 2010-07-15
By CMS36
Just got back from 4 days at Chincoteague VA. It was pretty windy all 4 days. The tent could not handle the wind. One of the corners kept collapsing. After a while of trying to realign so the wind would flow through, we just took it down. We used all the stakes, and tied off the corner with rope and filled the pockets with sand. The tent wasn't going anywhere, but it wasn't standing up to the wind either. So for a calm or low wind day, I'm sure it would have survived.

Another problem, if you keep the doors open, then you have a very limited area that will block the sun. So you either have to keep one of the doors closed, which will make it very hot inside, or you have to readjust yourself and anybody else who is inside, or you have to readjust the tent which is a lot of work with all the stakes holding it down.

I really wanted to like this tent, but it did not cut the mustard. Hopefully we'll get another chance on a calmer day.

"ABO instant pop up beach shelter" 2010-02-15
By Kadian J. O' Reilly (U.K)
We have 2 children under 5 years old and a beach shelter is idial when at the beach.

We go to Devon and Cornwall almost every year and usualy purchase a new shelter each year for £8-£10 which lasts a week if lucky!!

Problem is there a pain to put up and almost as bad to put down.

That's why we looked at this pop up shelter, and we have not been disapointed,it is far more robust than the usual shelters and honestly it pops up in under 10 seconds, giving you a base to put everything in rite away.

Putting the shelter down is also under 10 seconds and this one actualy easy fits back in to the bag provided.

Excellent Shelter and looks great it has the WOW facter and the ease of putting up is going to be the envy of other parants on the Beach this Summer as we go to Devon again in July.

Oh and it fits all your beach items in and the kids no problem.well worth the money.

 "Great shelter" 2009-09-14
By Erika Organsky
This was a great option. We purchased the beach shelter for a vacation at OCNJ. We have a 1 year old and a 4 year old. We were concerned with them getting too much sun. The kids loved it. They would play inside or take a nap. A great place to get out of the hot sun.

It was sooo easy to set up and take down. We watch others on the beach, with 3 and 4 people trying to assemble a tent. It took one person a few seconds. A second person is handy if its windy. It handled the wind very well too, which I was worried about.

A great investment!!! I highly recommend it.

"Don't leave it outside very long" 2009-11-18
By D. Silva (Rancho Cordova, CA)
The product is okay. Easy to carry, but really difficult to set up for one person.

I left the shelter up for 3 months in my yard hoping to relax the material and make set up easier. The sun and pole stress destroyed the material where the pole stress was the greatest. So for me it was only good for one season.

 "broke within a day" 2009-11-06
By Card Caller
As some other reviewers said, it took several people to set it up the first time: it needs a fair bit of strength to stretch the fabric enough to completely insert the support poles. It worked well for a day or so, but on an only moderately windy beach (Holden Beach, NC), one of the support poles broke within a day, rendering the shade unusable.

"Failed catastrophically at the beach, unfortunately" 2009-09-18
By Nicholas A. Barendt (Cleveland, OH USA)
I bought this for a family vacation on the North Carolina beach (Holden Beach, NC). I tested setting it up and breaking it down in the backyard at home and found it pretty easy. On the beach, with a little wind, though, it became a two-person job, which is understandable.

It worked well for about 4 hours, and then the wind picked up slightly The nylon shell holding one of the shock-corded supports tore open, and the one of the fiberglass support segments split in half, collapsing the entire shade in a spectacular failure. Fortunately no one was inside at the time. Other shelters on the beach seemed to stand up with little difficulty, so I do not think the wind speed was extreme by any measure.

So, I like the design as well as the ease of set up and tear down, but it is not strong enough for beach use.

 "Don't expect a response" 2009-09-13
By T. Culpepper (Oklahoma City, OK United States)
Bought one this spring for summer at the beach and test setup in the living room with no problems. During the actual use setup one of the sewn-in ring-loops on the corner completely ripped off making the shelter useless. After vacation contacted ABO three twice by email but never received any response (not even a "you're out of the return window" response). Buy at your own risk, I will not give them any more business.

"Hard to collapse, doesn't work in wind, too hot" 2009-11-29
By OaktonMom (Oakton, VA)
Very disapointed with this tent - would not buy again:

* Easy to set up; but very difficult to take down - takes two adults

* To short for adults to sit in (no idea how the 'models' in the photo do it?); definitely no room for adults to sit on beach chairs.

* Tent stakes are flimsy and don't hold

* Even weighted down with sand was practically airborne with the lightest of breeze. And yet....

* Terrible ventilation - gets way too hot.

We took to the beach on a cool morning with a light beach breeze, thinking our daughter could nap in the tent. Definitely not - it kept flying up, and it was way too hot after only a few moments in the tent. We tried again in the spring on a windless soccer field and it was equally hot in no time. I can't even imagine on a 90s+ day. In short, if you plan to use this in spring/summer/fall anywhere with a 5mph+ wind, forget it.

Quality of the case, fabric, etc seems fine but the construction just doesn't work at all for a summer beach tent.

"60 second Set Up and Take Down" 2009-10-27
By ActiveMom (Riverview, FL)
I love this tent! I took this on a beach vacation with my 1 year old. It tooks 60 seconds to set it up and take it down which is a plus when you have a toddler walking around near the water. It is roomy for 2 adults and a little one. Even on the breezy days the tent stayed put with the help of the provided stakes. I kept cool in the Florida sun. I plan to use it when we go for all day park outings or bike rides because it is lightweight and easy for me to carry. One caution, follow the take down instructions carefully so you do not damage the tent poles.

Good value for the money.

 "Great tent" 2009-08-14
By Nicholas R. Roux (New Jersey)
I strongly recommend this tent. We bought this tent for our 3 month old to rest in while we were on the beach. It is extremely easy to put up (it can be done in 30 seconds.) It works well on sunny days and we also used it on a very windy day and it held up to the wind without any problems. Don't waste your money on a cheaper tent that has to be put together. This one provides protection from the sun, easy set up and it is extremely light to carry in the bag that is included. The extra money you pay for this one is well worth it.

 "I recommend" 2009-08-07
By Oleblood (South Carolina USA)
Perfect for families (we were two adults and two children). We were completely satisfied with this purchase. Really could not be any easier to setup or breakdown. Wind was never an issue (we are in South Carolina, USA), we didn't even bother with filling the side pockets with sand; staking worked just fine. The door flap stakes down for a "porch" so our one year old was able to crawl in and out of the sun (the four year old never set foot in it). And when you get ready to leave you can just lift the tent and dump any sand, crumbs out. It is easy to carry in its bag; biked with it on my back with my four year old in tow.

"Love this tent, worth the money" 2009-08-06
By Melissa Farley (nj)
This tent is great. Its so easy to pop up and put back that we use it all the time. The beach, the house, the backyard, you name it, we've used the tent for it!!!! It is roomy, I am 5'9 and my husband is 6'1 and we both fit in it with my 2 and 3 year old. The 2 and 3 year old can also nap in it together which is nice. Its very stable against the wind of the beaches here in Jersey and I never even had to use the stakes just the sand pockets(which are awesome by the way). I just used another reviewers suggestion and brought a bunch of gallon size ziploc bags and filled them with sand to make it a bit less messy. Let me end this by saying I am not tent or outdoors savvy AT ALL. This tent was a breeze for me to operate and I can do it quickly. I do suggest trying it out in the house first so you know what to do at the beach. I LOVE THIS TENT !!!!
