"Died in the middle of the night and we froze" 2009-11-30
By Keith Johnson
I bought this heater as a tent heater for our cabin tent. We went camping in the mountains and pinned our hopes on this bugger to keep us warm. Around 1:00 am the propane ran out. Put in a new one in the "frozen tent" 2:00 am the batteries went dead. Brand new battery's were put in at 10:00 pm. Lasted 4 hours with the fan going. 3:00 am kids woke up frozen and wanted to go home. Put new batteries in and new propane at 3:30 am. Tent still frozen at 5:00 am. Decided to set up wood burner that came with tent even though it had never been used. Expected lots of smoke and choking kids but unbelievably the wood stove did not smoke and heated the tent up to about 70 degrees. Kids and spouse survived. Lesson learned. Do not depend on this Coleman heater to keep your tent warm at night.

"Life saver in the Cold California Sierras!!" 2009-11-10
By Rory Egan (Dana Point, Ca)
I love this heater! Brought this along while tent camping in March in Yosemite Valley. There was still snow around the summits and in some low areas and in the nights the temp dropped into the low 20's and below. With this heater on from bed time till morning, it keep the tent an average of high 50's to mid 60's!! Our tent is a rather large tent too and it worked great (Tent = Sierra Designs, WuHu Annex 6+2)We were comfortable all night when it was on, a full canister lasts about 12-14 hours. Found out by waking up after the second night we used it and it was freezing in the tent. The canister ran out, just popped a new one in and turned it back on and was warmed up again in less than an hour. The built in fan is a very nice feature of this heater vs the other models by coleman, and had much to do with keeping the tent a even temperature. Takes two D batteries and the batteries will last a few days from my experience. Only knocked off a star becuase mine has had an issue with an internal clip coming loose a couple times. This was due in my view to the screen of the heater not being supported more directly by the metal bezel that you see in the photo. The heater screen just kinda floats in the bezel keeping it in place yet able to me jostled if dropped or bumped good. I'm a pretty handy guy and fixed this on my own... But I am confident that this will be in my essentials kit for many years to come and will work anytime I need it thanks to its simple and effective design.

Must note that you need to make sure you have the adequate ventilation if using this in an enclosed area like a tent... I can attest that if you do make sure you have the ventilation, you will be fine and need not to worry. I was worried the first time, but trusted in the facts and went by them.

 "Coleman ProCat" 2009-06-14
By CO Camper (Denver, Colorado)
We recently purchased a large tent (15x12) and needed a propane heater that could stand up to the task of keeping the inside of the tent comfortable on cold nights. We purchased two of the Coleman ProCats for this purpose and they worked absolutely beautifully! I was skeptical at first, preferring to keep warm with multiple sleeping layers, but gave in when my partner insisted. Now that we've used them, we won't camp again without having them with us. The battery operated fan made all the difference in the world when it came to dispersing the heat throughout the entire tent, even though the roof was completely mesh (with the fly elevated about 6" above it). Our heaters ran constantly on high for over 8 hours without giving up. Two hours before turning in for the night, my partner turned them on. By the time we went to bed around 11:00, temperatures outside were in the 30s, while inside the tent, it was comfortable enough to wear t-shirts. By morning, it was a little cooler, but still warm enough to not see your breath - an oddity in the Colorado mountains at 5:00 in the morning, for sure!

As is common sense, ALWAYS light the heaters outdoors or, at the very least, well away from the sides of tents or other flammable material, as they do emit a flame when first ignited.

Simply the best! We love you, Coleman! I've posted a photo from inside our tent.

 "good little heater" 2009-05-11
By J. Perry
I;ve owned this little heater for almost 2 years. Mainly use it in a small fiberglass travel trailer (18 footer similar to Scamp). Have used it several times in the mountains at 6,000 to 9,000 ft. with temps dipping to upper 20's. It really takes the chill off. Makes the little trailer seem almost warm though its really only in the lower 50's after running for some time. But heck, that beats a cold 28 degrees. The bottles last about like everyone says. I don't sleep through the night with it running but do turn it on a little while before getting up. Have also used it in a little workshop which was way bigger then my trailer. Did not do much good but it tried. Have probably ran it over 100 hrs with no problems. I like it and would recommend it.

 "Remember the price..." 2009-12-15
By J. Flood (New Jersey)
Remeber how much you're paying for this and I think you'll be fine. It's a lightweight 3 person tent wellsuited for light camping needs. Great for backyard or cub scout type camping, maybe not what you want for a week in the woods. Happy with mine even though one of the poles just split. I'll patch it and keep it till it drops and then probably buy another one. If you want a better tent, you should probably spend more money.

"With this Tent you get Less than you Pay for - Broke During Indoor Setup" 2009-10-28
By Kurt Morrow (Americus GA)
I bought this tent in preparation for backpacking with a friend. We are on a really tight budget and we want to travel rather light. When we saw this tent, especially for the low price, we got it. We figured it wouldn't be the best quality tent but we are both versatile and can make do with little.

But this tent far exceeded our expectations of low quality.

Both of us have camped in tents often, of different types and qualities. We set it up in a living room and were amazed at how badly the tent was made.

First the poles. These are extremely flimsy fiberglass poles. While we were setting it up one of the poles splintered 3 inches or so down the pole (it was already starting to splinter when I opened the tent). The cord on one of the poles (the rain fly pole over the doors) snapped. In a few other places the cord was already starting to fray.

We put up the main tent with no other problems. All the materials look like they are about to fall apart. We could see pin-prick holes of light through the main tent material. By this time we knew that this would not meet our minimal needs. With the splintering poles, the cord falling apart, the unbelievably flimsy and cheap materials, we recognized it as the piece of junk it is. We didn't set up the rainfly (we were trying to keep everything in as good order so we could return it, which amazon did perfectly on) so we can't comment on that.

If you plan on camping and need a shelter and only have [...] it would be a better idea to buy some tarps or something. Personally we decided to buy a more expensive tent (the ALPS zephyr 3 which we found on sale for [...]).

By G. Yang (Boston, MA)
the rain fly is too small to cover enough place of the tent. the tent itself is not water proof. if any part of body or sleeping bag touch the wall of the tent, the water will get in. the night I did camping had a light rain. In the morning, I found my sleeping bag was wet!

Cannot complain too much based on its price. It would be a good deal if the rain fly were larger.

"Good Product - but faulty Zipper on D shaped Door" 2009-10-20
By Richard L. Ray Jr.
The tent worked fine even in light rain, but the main zipper on the D shaped door would not zip at the curved part of the door. There are 3 zippers on the door - but the one to open the door to access the tent was faulty. I used WD-40 on the zipper, but it did not help. It would bind so badly I was afraid I would rip the tent attempting to open and close the Zipper.

"It Worked, Even in Extremes" 2009-12-28
By Jay Crandell
This tent was chosen for its price and it's relatively light weight. On the first use, it was put to the test. While a 3-season tent, it did well on a 15 mile hike including two nights in foul, winter weather (one with sleet and the second with about 6 inches of snow and temps in the low 20s). It was well vented and this resulted in cool temps inside the tent, but nothing that a good mummy bag and clothing could not address. We had no problem with condensation (what was there was frozen anyway). The vestibules on both sides of the tent were terrific for my and my son's gear -- keeping our things out of the way of each other. All in all, the tent was easy to use and did the job. Very satisfied.

"Good value, quality construction and design elements" 2009-12-12
By W.J. Howey
Purpose:

This tent was purchased for YMCA Adventure Guide Camping with my Son and Daughter. It will complement an Eddie Bauer 6-person, and a REI Bivy Sack.

Criteria:

(1) quick set-up, (2) ability to withstand rain, and (3) ball park of $100.00 - total package.

Comparables:

I chiefly compared the Eureka Apex 2XT to the REI Dome 2 and the Coleman Sundome. I went with the Eureka as opposed to the REI based on total price and the extra space afforded in the vestibule set-up. I went with the Eureka as opposed to the Coleman based on a design more clearly able to withstand rain (we're camping in Central/East Texas) and set-up time.

About the Tent:

Set-up is easily under 10 minutes, by yourself, under adverse lighting conditions - well except for maybe for a hungry child but that's another story. It passed the garden hose test. I have not treated the fly, I generally don't mess with stuff unless there is a problem - superstition.

You need to be aware there is marked difference in the design of the Apex 2 outer fly and the Apex 2XT. If precipitation is a substantial consideration in where you intend to be camping with this tent, go the extra couple dollars with the 2XT. The fly system is such that you must stake it to obtain true "watertight" design. This is important as many times I see complaints about leaking it is because the fly is touching the tent - you most always will get leaks when this happens.

The footprint (an optional piece) is only big enough to cover the tent itself. If you want coverage in the vestibule area you might consider some cheap welcome mats (if you're car camping). The tent bag is of sufficient size to easily hold the tent system and the footprint. I'd recommend the footprint if you anticipate the use I have outlined, the floor material is pretty lightweight, and the footprint is only a few 20 dollars extra.

On inspection, all seams - particularly the critical ones - are clean and well constructed. No frays, slop, or loose ends. The only ding I found is one of the zippers did not have its string/rope tab. I slipped in a keychain/dogtag so we're good to go. Overall, this is a top quality tent which is to be expected from Eureka! as they have been producing top shelf outdoors gear for a long, long time.

"Great tent - Especially for the price!" 2009-11-15
By J. D. White (Alabama)
This may not be the lightest tent on the market, but it's definitely the lightest for the price. You may be able to drop a pound by dropping another hundred bucks...not worth it to me! There is plenty of room, both inside the tent and inside BOTH vestibules. I'm not sure if it was necessary, but I chose to waterproof the exterior of tent and the rainfly with spray silicone. It was still up in the back yard the next day when a HUGE rainstorm came - an all day downpour! When I checked it that night, there was not a drop in the tent. I was super impressed. It's also extremely easy to pitch (read 3-mins). We've had no condensation problems due to ample venting. If there's no rain in the forecast, I would recommend leaving the rainfly off - awesome view due to 4-walls of noseeum mesh.

I recommend this tent.

This tent is easy to set up, (10 min for one person 5 for two), is light enough for backpacking, and roomy enough for two. My brother and I had plenty of room and we are big buys. The two vestubiles are roomy enough to keep your gear dry. I would recommend this to a friend.

"Apex 2XT with full rain fly" 2009-10-20
By Kenneth S. (Georgia)
This review is for the Apex 2XT with FULL rain fly.

My first outting with this tent was a 3 day trip in October 09 to Pine Mt. GA during which it rained 1"+ a day for the whole week with temps down to low 40's high 30's at night. The seams around the top arch of the fly door zippers leaked but the material held up very well. I adjusted the angle at which the fly was staked out and got a little improvement with a very taut set. A little seam sealer should see some improvement. It was well ventillated so after mopping up moisture wasn't a problem. The set up and break down, both in heavy rain, were simple and quick. At 6'3" and broad at the shoulder this serves as a one man tent for me. Two could make do but it would be tight. At 5 lbs 12 oz I wouldn't want to carry it very long distances but for a few miles a day or base camping it's not too bad. The vestibules are huge and have plenty of room for two sets of gear and more. At 6'3" I didn't think I would have the previously mentioned problem of reaching the fly zipper but even I had to crawl out into the mud with a camp shoe on one hand. The angle of the fly and tent doors also allow rain to come straight down into the tent when entering/exiting. So have your mind set about what you're doing and make it quick to minimize exposure. The tent itself is very well ventillated with plenty of mesh. This is a solid tent for the price and I would recommend it it to anyone from beginer to old timer. But, as with any gear how you use and care for it will determine how well it does in the long run.

PROS:

Good Price

Well ventillated

Huge vesibules

Easy set up/ take down

Solid craftsmanship

Weight decent if spilt between two packers

CONS:(Poor design of Fly/Vestibule)

Seams of fly zipper leaked

Rains straight down into tent door when fly door is opened

Zippers awkwardly far from door

"Great tent and water proof" 2009-12-30
By Cheryl A. Murphy (Missouri)
Bought this tent at Walmart while camping in South Dakota. Our old tent almost collapsed from the rains and literally flooded, it was like a river. Our son was using a 9x7 Coleman tent set up next to our big tent and didn't have a drop of water in it while we washed away. Made me a believer. We used this tent for myself, husband and daughter, had plenty of room it in, the back zipper flap is great for bringing in an electric cord so we didn't have to fight an electric cord every time we came in or out. Definitely a two person job to put the tent up, but no big deal. Very reasonably priced and would buy another one. Durable, well constructed, I say water proof, not just water resistent. Good windows in it, nice ventilation, you can stand up in it without hitting your head in the middle of the tent. Will use it again this summer in Colorado - can't wait.

I set this tent up in about ten minutes with the help of a friend. It was very easy to do. I bought this for myself and my five kids. We set up two queen airbeds on either side of the tent and there was room for a third in the center. The tent is very spacious and comfortable. The weather was great so I can't speak to how it would do in the rain but the rain fly covered the tent sufficiently so I'm sure it would have been fine. I was very happy with it and my kids thought it was great!

I'm sure that this is a handy kit to have. The tent stakes are much sturdier than the ones that came with my tent. For me, they also arrived pre-rusted -- a significant amount of rust covering most of the metal surfaces on all 4 stakes.

For what I paid for the item plus 2-day shipping, I'd prefer to rust my own stakes. These are going back.

"Nice kit except for one problem" 2009-08-25
By Boo
I bought this kit for my husband after our first camping trip and my husband 1) forgot to bring a mallet and broom and dustpan and 2) the stakes that came with our tent all bent the first time we tried to hammer them in.

It's nice to get it all in one little sack so we don't forget anything. I have since decided a large broom and battery operated hand vac suits my taste better than a little broom and dustpan, but those are still handy to have around.

The stakes in this kit are sturdier than the ones that came with our tent (i.e., they don't bend easily). The mallet works and we have no problem with it.

The stake puller works, but only if the stakes aren't stuck in the ground. The last time we used it, the stakes wouldn't come out and we were afraid plastic heads on the stakes would come off with the stake puller. It would be nice if either the stake heads weren't made of plastic or the stake puller would grip stake body so we could get a grip on the stake and pull.

Other than the problem with removing the stakes, I have no complaints.
