"Works, but tears easily if stretched tight." 2009-09-04
By Thor Simon (New York, NY United States)
As I said in my review for the Mutha Hubba HP tent, "Buy the optional footprint but don't try to stretch it tight -- it is slightly undersized and *will* tear if you do so. This tent floor is quite waterproof and does not need edge-to-edge protection from the footprint, which is mostly to keep it from grinding on the dirt and becoming no longer watertight."

I suspect this footprint was designed for the older non-HP Mutha Hubba model and that that tent perhaps has a slightly smaller footprint. This one ends up slightly undersized on the Mutha Hubba HP, but it still works fine -- just don't try to stretch it to fit perfectly, the edge stitching will tear out.

 "I <3 this tent!" 2010-03-08
By E. Godfrey (Eastish...)
I bought this tent a few years ago and have nothing but kind things to say about it.

1.) It's sorta light. Considering its size, it's sorta light, probably around 7 pounds when you include the footprint (not included.) Considering how voluminous this thing is, I really don't mind the extra ounces.

2.) It's freakin' huge. Seriously, this thing is the airplane hanger of small tents. The way the poles pull this thing apart, there is just tons of headroom in this then. Maybe it's a character defect of mine, but I get a little uneasy being in confined areas, like when you're trying to get a pair of pants on in a tent and you're banging your head against a wall/ceiling. I've never had a problem like that in this tent. Seriously, it's gigantic. I'll bet if you took a ratio of square footage to cubic footage, this one would win by a mile.

3.) It's mostly screen. No more riding out humid, still nights. With all-around screen, whatever little wind is around -will- pass through your tent. My last tent had a clever wind-flow system so that you had to position the tent just right with respect to the wind to catch any breeze. Never again!

4.) It's easy to use. It's a snap to put up and the rain fly is very easy to deal with. The doors are very intuitive and easy to get in and out of. It's really a no brainer. The only challenge is reading the directions the first few times to figure out when, where and how the poles go in. After that, it's smooth sailing.

5.) It's lasting quite well. I've had this for three years now and we camp regularly in it, even in the snow. So far, no stitches have popped, all the zippers are cherry and as far as I can tell, there isn't even any abrasion on it. My guess is that the rain fly has faded a bit, but I would have to compare it to a fresh one. Other than that, I'm quite surprised at how well this is holding up.

This is a really great tent. My -only- complaint is that the vestibules really cannot hold that much stuff. When this is billed as a "three person tent" I'd say there is no theoretical way to fit three campers and all of their stuff into this tent. For the two of us, however, this tent is just perfect.

"Light, Bright and Surprisingly Roomy!" 2009-10-31
By Eileen Corder (West Coast)
I spent several weeks researching one-person tents and found the lightest and most affordable to be the MSR Hubba, Sierra Design's Lightning XT1, Eureka's Back Country 1 and the ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1. Both the Zephyr and Back Country were relatively inexpensive ($100-130), both were large for a solo tent (23-24 sq ft each), and both weighed approx 4 pounds. The Eureka is very popular judging from the ample positive online reviews, but I didn't like the fly designs of either of these tents. The ALPS has a top triangle that purportedly catches water and the Eureka's barely extends past the door.

On to the Hubba and Lightning. Both were similar prices ($200-250) and had similar space (Hubba - 17 and Lightning - 19 sq ft). Both weighed in at 3 lbs 6 ozs but the Lightning's width at 32" seemed more friendly than MSR's 26". The Hubba is the most popular of the two but there were a few reviewers who gave a thumbs down on the narrow width. Unfortunately, I found almost no reviews for the Lightning.

In the end I went with the Hubba because of it's sleek design. The first time I set it up I was surprised at how tall and wide it was. Inside it felt big, much bigger than I had expected. The length is ample at 86" (the Lightning is 82") and the way the top crosspole opens the ceiling as wide as the bottom provides very comfortable head space. The bath tub floor comes up higher mid-tent so if you like to sleep on your side, it will expand with a fully bent knee. This tent, which is made in Taiwan, is well-constructed from seams to poles and feather light stakes. Set up is fast and easy. The short poles at either end are permanently attached to a hub as is the crosspole, but despite the fact that there is essentially only one pole the Hubba is solid even without staking. Plus, there are loops at the corners of the square ceiling where you could attach an attic.

A plus for me is the fly's yellow color. After the sun goes down, the yellow catches the waning light and puts it on the page of my book or notebook, a BIG help for someone who likes to read or write before turning in. I am so happy with this tent!

 "Nice, very nice." 2009-12-12
By MrMostly
Just had this out for 5 days backpacking. I got the HP version because there is less netting to let in cold air. This feature, along with the full rain fly kept me quite cozy down to about 30 degrees Fahrenheit. At the height of summer, this tent might bee too hot....even without the rain-fly.

Other advantages are the two doors that allow one person to leave the tent without climbing over the other. Also, it is free standing. When you are camping in rocky ground being freestanding is a real help.

For one person, there is a very generous amount of room. The lightness of the HP version mitigates to some degree the extra weight.

Packing: The poles break down to short lengths that are easy to pack. The stuff sack provided is grossly over-sized. I suppose you could put the footprint in there as well.

Set-up: Easy. No pushing poles through sleeves required. Do it once at home but by the 3rd time no brain power required.

Quality: Quite good. The poles and hubs are well designed and sturdy. The fabric seems quite thin but is actully robust in practice. I pitched the tent over a sharp sapling not noticing it until morning on one occasion. The Tent floor held up well to this challenge. The pegs that come with are really works of art. They seem to be sculpted out of magnesium or similar material and anodized. Unfortunately, they are but 4-5 inches long. I believe I'll be replacing them with titanium ones before my next trip.

"Great update to a great tent!" 2009-03-06
By Brooke M. Drury (Seattle, WA USA)
The HP version of the Hubba Hubba tent offers increased protection for cooler, windy nights, yet weighs less than the original. The freestanding structure is a snap to set up, and offers a very comfortable haven for 2 adults. The features include 2 doors and 2 vestibules which is great for gear storage and late night exits when nature calls. The handy gear loft helps keep the interior clutter free. Overall this is a very comfortable, lightweight, liveable backpacking tent suitable for all but the worst winter conditions.

"The finest two person tent you can buy" 2009-05-02
By Jason T. Lindberg (Chicago, IL, USA)
MSR really perfected this design, which has yet to be surpassed by (nearly) any other tent manufacturer (possible exception: MSR Hubba Hubba HP 2-Person Tent). The hub pole is simple and lightweight, making set up a breeze. The fine mesh allows for great ventilation, further weight shavings, and excellent star gazing on nights without the rain fly. The coatings on both the fly and floor of the tent are very strong and ample for, dare I say, 'excessive' waterproofing. The interior walls are drawn nearly vertical to create a welcoming large space inside, complemented by two roomy vestibules for your gear and nice, bright colors to add a little cheer if you end up caught in your tent during a downpour. Fast and light set up is available if you know you can bank on good weather with an optional Hubba Hubba and Hubba Hubba HP Tent Footprint by MSR.
