"Not Quite MSR Ground Hogs" 2010-08-24
By Lux Camper (Indiana)
These stakes are hard almuminum, and take hammer hits well. Pulling out of most soils was easy enough. Their shape provides good holding power and easy removal. Where they fall short of Ground Hogs, is their bending point. Wall thickness is thinner, and they will bend even when driven up to their necks. To give the stakes credit, I was loading them very heavily; far more than I could have loaded wire stakes, and others.

Overall, I like them. For only $7 I had to give them a try. I am a recreational camper who doesn't need ultra-reliable stakes, and these were actually pretty good. Probably a good purchase for campers who don't really need eight Ground Hogs (like me).

Those who travel all over, and need reliable stakes to pound into concrete will need Ground Hogs, but for those who need good stakes for regular dirt, these work well.

P.S. I straightened my 2 bent stakes, and they will hold pretty much anything I tie on them. Just not the ridiculous load that originally bent them.

"Work very well and strong" 2010-07-09
By S. Karl (Michigan)
I picked these up as an alternative to MSR Groundhogs or Sierra Designs Y-Stakes.

One things I really like about these is that they are long 9" length. My Sierra Design Y-Stakes are only about 6".

After reviewing them, they are all about the same strength. Extremely hard to bend by hand(even my giant hands- I'm 6'4 300+lbs). All the brands performed the same, great. And miles better then the provided stakes with my Kelty Gunnison 4.1.

Is any brand better than the other? Not really. They are made in different lengths by the different brands but that's about it. So pick the length that works for you. Oh, some include a paracord like loop, some don't. Whether that helps your case or not is up to you to decide. Some say it helps when you're pulling them out of the ground.

If you don't want to deal with the y-shape(attaching to the tent is sometimes tricky or frustrating) I would suggest looking at Sierra Design's Hex-Peg stakes or Kelty Nobendium Stakes. The Sierra Design stakes are a bit stronger than the Kelty stakes as I stated in my other reviews.

 "Outside Christmas Decoration Necessity" 2009-12-12
By L. Steadman (FORT WHITE, FLORIDA, US)
We put up around 2 acres of Christmas decorations for people to come by and enjoy. Since our land is sandy the Coleman 12 inch metal tent stakes are a must to keep the decorations in place. The small stakes that come with the large outside items are of no value in sandy soil. The first puff of wind and they are down.

 "withstood the desert winds" 2008-11-20
By E. Rosler (NY)
I bought these stakes for my trip to Burning Man in Nevada. Apparently there are some wicked sandstorms on the playa and they suggest using foot-long rebar to keep your tent from flying away. Rebar? Seriously? Who has a supply of rebar handy? Not me. So instead I picked up a set of these.

When the sandstorm hit, winds whipping across the playa at over 50mph, my tent stayed exactly where it was. The same can't be said for my neighbors who just used the normal stakes that came with their tent.

While they ran chasing down their tent, I was able to sit in the wind and enjoy the show.

 "Avoid!" 2006-05-21
By Batman
Just bought these a few weeks ago (12 stakes total - 3 sets) for a trip to Joshua Tree, CA. Just returned, in the semi-hard desert sand ALL of them started bending when tapped in (using rubber mallet first, then hammer). 8 of them bent 90 degrees at the head. Ended up using the smaller, standard stakes that came with the tent. Very disappointed, as the standard stakes with the plastic tops snap easily as well, but at least the metal parts remain straight and still usable.

I used 13 of these stakes over Memorial Day weekend and 3 of them bent. By comparison, I used 12 MSR Ground Hog stakes on a separate tent and none of them bent. Get the Ground Hogs, you'll get what you pay for: MSR Ground Hog Stake Kit.

"Every gram counts when you are backpacking!" 2009-04-15
By E. Tucker
I purchased these before a bike/backpacking trip to False Cape State Park in Virginia. I've got the standard tent stakes that come with every tent but needed something a bit more substantial as I was setting my tent in sand. These stakes were long enough and shaped in a way that they held admirably in the sand, didn't budge an inch. Also they are very lightweight and are easy to sink without much added effort. Every gram counts when you are backpacking. 100% Recommended!

"Were a must have for me!" 2010-01-08
By Brian T. Alexander (Jackson, MS)
I am an avid backpacker and mountaineer. I have climbed a couple mountains in the 13-14 thousand foot range. I am climbing The Ben and a few other mountains in Scotland this winter. I use a backpacking tent and i used to bother with those light weight aluminum stakes that bend, like a palm in a hurricane, on frozen ground and rock. I grew tired of this and I bought these stakes. In short: they are ballin'. If they bend your stake should not be there. As for the weight, they feel just as lite as the cheap aluminum ones.

Customer Buzz
 "Medium duty tent stakes" 2009-10-13
By FS (Annapolis, MD USA)
I bought these Kelty Nobendium II Tent Stakes as an extra set of stakes for my Kelty tent. However, tent stakes are tent stakes and these can be used with any tent. They are sturdier than the stakes which came with the tent. They can take a little banging with your hammer as long as you use reasonable care. I have been tent camping for many years and generally prefer more rustic terrain. I always carry a variety of tent stakes so that I'm not caught short. The stakes that come with most tents are sufficient when you need light holding power. I like to carry a longer and sturdier stake that can take a lot of pounding for rougher ground. These Kelty stake are a great in-the-middle medium duty tent stake.

Customer Buzz
 "Nobendium? Lies!" 2009-09-30
By J (Rochester, NY)
They should really change this product's name to something like EasyBends.

These came with my $450 Kelty tent and after the third use, they're all bent out of shape. I go camping a lot in upstate New York. The first time out in the Thousand Island regions they were fine. The ground was not too hard, not too soft. Second time I went out to Higley Flow State Park near the Adirondacks foothills (terrible park, don't go there) and they weren't too bad there, the ground was a little harder. Third time I went out to the Adirondacks near Lake George and when we went to stake the tent, they all suddenly bent in weird shapes. Granted the ground was a little hard, but I'm a pretty avid camper and I know how to put in stakes. I bought the titanium stakes from Vargo to replace them. Plus, why are they pink? Couldn't they be a normal color?

Customer Buzz
"Stake your claim to a secure night's sleep" 2007-07-16
By Daniel Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA USA)
Your tent will most likely include a set of "skewer" stakes. Eventually you may lose some, bend them, break them or tire of always searching for just the right location to put your stake in the ground. The only justifiable reason for Kelty to sell these is because they are better than the cheap ones that come with the tent.

The material will take more pounding, the shaft is thicker and it has sides like a pencil; this makes the stake hold in the ground better and makes it sturdier yet they don't weigh a lot.

Of course, you don't need to rush right out and replace your originals, unless you broke, bent or lost yours. Before any of those bad things happens, you should consider these if you want the best shot at securing your tent to ground under less than ideal conditions.

Best of outdoor life to you.
