i bought this tent for a week long canoe/backpacking trip in the boundary waters. The tent was awesome. I sealed the seams before the trip and despite heavy rainfall it did not leak. i am very happy with this tent. It is a great value for the money. One suggestion, buy the footprint becaise the botton is thin and it could tear on rocky ground.

Been using this tent for a few months steadily in Glacier National Park. Tent has excellent ventilation and is very roomy. Packs up small and is fairly light. Has held up well in 40-50 mph winds, hail and heavy rain in a thunderstorm with several additional guy lines attached, but also leaked slightly through the seams of the vestibule. Just a warning for buyers, waterproof the fly seams (probably should for any tent.) After a couple coats of sealant, tent was completely waterproof. So far a great lightweight tent!

I am an Assistant Scoutmaster and purchased this tent two years ago for myself and one for my son. We have used our tents for the past two years and have been very pleased with their performance. The first thing I did before our first camping trip was seal all of the seams. Even though the seams are factory tape sealed, I felt better sealing them again. The ventilation is very good, the tent is comfortable (I am 6'2"), and the fly works very well. In several nights of camping in the rain, I have not gotten wet once and the tent held up well in windy weather. The tents are roomy and very easy to set up. This is a very nice tent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a very good tent at a reasonable price.

My boyfriend and I used this tent for a 1- month bicycling and camping trip. We had previously had the Eureka Backcountry, a very similar tent.



We did not like the way the vestibules were designed. If it is raining hard, and you want to get into the tent, then opening the vestibules will allow rain to get inside the tent through the mesh doors. This is a fine tent is you are only a fair-weather camper, but if you camp in the rain or if you go on long trips where it might rain some day, beware.



Our previous tent was better - the old Eureka Backcountry had zip-up solid panels on the mesh on the door.



We did like the way the Apex has two doors, but we are going to look for a tent with a better design.

 "Good but would try another Eureka" 2008-10-06

I bought the 3XTA after having the Eureka Timberline2 for many years. I wanted something bigger than a 2 man and this does the trick. It is great for 2 people but 3 would be cramped if you start bringing in your packs.

Pros - Easy to set up and light weight. No problems for one person to set up and move around before putting the stakes down.

The mesh is really tight and if noseeums are a problem for you, this will stop them.

Having a door on each side allows each person to get in and out without bothering the other.



Cons - Be careful when setting up as the side with the little triangle window (the "!" logo) really needs to be facing towards the lowest grade of incline. We were almost flat but still had the window at the highest grade. It rained the 2nd night and although no rain got in, the rain slides right down the fly and over the window. This then leads to rain running under your tent instead of the ground tarp. Tent was wet between ground tarp but bone dry between ground and tarp. Glad I sealed everything even after factory tape seal.

Also, I miss being able to open a window without having the world look in. If the fly is open (for a breeze) you have no protection from people looking in. And it is either all or nothing to have it open.

Lastly, the fly zipper is really long. To get out, you have to reach all the way across the open ground to grab it. Tough if it rains and there is mud right outside your door. As soon as you open the fly, you will get rain coming into your tent through the mesh. Since the zipper head is at the ground level, it gets mud and dirt on it so it makes it tough to zip up or down.



Overall, I would probably not buy this again. At least not for my purposes. I'll probably buy a 4 season tent and use this as a back up or for the kids. At least the price was really good. Glad I only spent $161 on it.

This is one of the best tents I have purchased for backpacking. It is very light but strong and sturdy. Myself and my brother are both 6 foot 1 and had plenty of room. Setup and takedown is very easy and a quick process. The 2 doors and vestibules are a great addition to this tent. Dont forget to waterproof and seam seal this tent and also place a tarp underneath it and it will last for a very long time. Eureka has done it again!

Pros: Roomy enough for two + gear. Me=6'0" Her=5'2" Like other Eureka tents, very intuitive, easy quick set-up. I hook a Coleman Zephyr LED tent fan/light ($20 at Chinamart) on the ceiling loop. This was a godsend on warm nights (see ventilation comment below). Decent price $160. This tent has seen a good dose of rain and it is watertight. I did seal the factory sealed seams with Kenyon Seam Sealer 3. Wind is also not an issue. I have great confidence in the strength of the aluminum frame.



Cons: Plastic tent stakes...boo! I use MSR Groundhogs-excellent in the hardest ground.MSR Groundhog Stake (Each) Model 312054

Unzipping the fly is a loooonnnng reach even for me (6'0"). Zipper is at the far corner of the vestibule and dew/rain on the fly will get you wet if not careful. Ventilation is inadequate in hot/muggy weather. In warm weather you may want to leave the fly unzipped on BOTH vestibules. The one vent doesn't seem to do much.



I considered the Eureka Pinnacle Pass 2A but I wanted the vestibules for more elbow room inside. Given the lack of ventilation with the 3XTA, I would give serious consideration to the 2A again.

Bought this tent last fall and I love it. Have been backpacking and regular car camping works great for both. I have been in all night rain storms and nights down in the low twenty's the tent has performed well. The three man size is great for two guys and backpacks. The vestibles are probably good for small packs, but not the larger 6500 size. But they are great for leaving your boots in and keeping the tent dry. The ventilation is great and only one side of the interior is actually not covered by the rain fly, this gives complete protection for the other three sides. This allows to to pack gear up against the sides and not get wet. Very lightweight and attaches easily right to my backpack.

 "Most bang for the buck" 2010-02-08

The 2 is a bigger version of the Spitfire 1. It has entries on both sides. Both are excellent buys.



I use this tent for bicycle touring. It packs nicely into one rear pannier with some room to spare. The aluminum poles and stakes ride on my rear rack. In good weather, you can actually stabilize this tent with just 2 stakes, tho 4 will make for a tighter pitch. I've experienced several rainy nights with no significant leakage. It's plenty big enough for two normal sized people to sleep comfortably. In fact, on one car trip with my wife, I put a full size blow up mattress in it so she'd be wouldn't feel the pea. I love the 43" peak height, the excellent zippers, the subdued color of the inner tent and the rainfly, the simple, quick erection, and it's durability.



The negatives are lack of significant vestibule space and the need to add a couple of stake points to the fly to make it totally taunt, important for rain shedding. Condensation in cold weather is a factor, but that would be true with any tent. There is a vent at the top that helps.



No Hilleberg, but at 1/5th the price, I'll take it.

I thought the tent was a great buy. I use it about twice a week through many different types of terrain. Though everyone has complained about the cheap stakes that are included, they're really not that bad. It'd be wiser to use other stakes, but these would be just fine. Space inside the tent was bigger than expected. You can't go wrong with Eureka tents.

While i still have yet to try this tent out on a long outing in back country like I intended when I purhcased it, I have had nothing but great experiences with it so far. I bought this tent while looking for a cheap(price, not quality), lightweight, 3 season tent to take out to Glacier NP next May. While it would be slightly more convenient if it was self supporting/standing, I have come up with numerous ways to set it up indoors by knotting the anchors down to weights etc. I have actually camped outside w/ it twice so far(each just for one night). On my first experience, I woke up w/ the bottom being slightly wet as it had rained that night, and a little moisture between the rain fly and the mesh (apparently I didn't tighten the fly enough to keep it separated from the mesh, so moisture built in between). After this, I made a custom footprint by following directions I found from a video(using heavy duty tarp). I tried the tent out the next night and woke up with everything completely dry so I would recommend using a footprint.

I love all the mesh allowing air to pass through and the rain fly does a great job. Would suggest getting better stakes(bent a couple after my second outing). Otherwise, no complaints here.

This tent is very spacious for a 2 man tent. I really like that there are openings on each side of the tent so that you don't have to crawl over someone to get in. For true backpacking you need to replace the stakes(for weight reasons).

This tent is extremely light (just under a pound heavier than the ultra-light model) and is perfect for long back-packing trips. The bathtub floor and rainfly do everything possible to keep the water out. If staked down properly, water wont ever get in. I didnt even use the guy outs on the fly and water STILL didnt get in. On a clear night, the fly can be taken off completely or rolled up on the sides. If taken off, the entire night sky is avaiable for your perusal. Essentially, the tent without the fly is nothing but bug screening. It's the fly that actually gives the tent some privacy walls.



Now for the skinny:



I took this tent out on a camping trip and found the second day to be nothing short of a torrential downpour. It was then that I noticed the short side of owning this particular tent. Having NO VESTIBULE makes for a very wet entry into your tent. With his vestibule, my friend was able to have a place to shelter him from the water and take off/store his muddy boots where they woudlnt get rained on all night. The Spitfire doesnt have that ability, so you'll be forced to drag your muddy boots into the tent with you along with all the water that you wont be able to shake off.



For back-packing, this tent is hands down terriffic, but I am still going to look for another Eureka model that has a vestibule for those trips that last longer than any weather report.



One other thing to consider is that this tent is not free-standing, so you'll want to purchase some Groundhog Tent Stakes MSR Ground Hog Stake Kit or something equivalent that will do the job in rocky terrain (better to buy for rocky than to be without when the time is needed). The tent and fly can be put up with only 4 stakes, but a better idea would be to use 6 so the tent can be pulled out to its full width.



Lastly, unless you and the person you are sharing this tent with are on a romantic level, then I would suggest purchasing another tent for two. The only way it could work is for head to toe sleeping, but warm weather causes a bag to be thrown back and this creates a recipe for feet in the face. This tent is great for one person and some gear, but definitely not suited for two. Even if it had a vestibule for gear and boots, this tent would be ill suited for two people.
