Bad tent, leaked first time it was in the rain. Front fly does not open in the middle making it very hard to open and close from the inside. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

"Poles are much to be desired" 2010-06-29
By bsdavidson
I bought this tent for a family camping trip. I really like the concept of the tent and the price was right.

There is not much more I can add to the review detailing the whole tent from setup to verdict by JPaint21. I absolutely agree with the review.

I just want to add an issue I have with the tent.

- The Poles

During my weekend trip we did not experience rain/winds of any kind. When we took the tent down the poles were bent at each connection point. I'm sure if this tent experiences any wind at all there is a high risk of damage.

"Great concept with a few flaws" 2010-04-27
By JPaint21 (Alabama USA)
We purchased this tent in March and have camped out in it twice now, once in the backyard just for fun and once for a week at a time. We really enjoy this tent and it is exactly what we were looking for. Here are my findings:

Setup: Very simple. It's basically a double "dome" design, with two sets of two long poles that cross over and form two connected domes. The stakes are metal rather than plastic, although they do bend somewhat easily in hard ground. The rainfly has one long pole that goes down the center and is easy to get up and over the tent. It could be tough to set up by just one person, but if you need a tent this big, you've probably got more than one person there to do it. There are plenty of ties, clips, and velcro to hold the poles to the tent and the rainfly down on top.

Space: This is a VERY roomy tent. There is more than enough room for most people to stand up in it, and you could easily fit two queen size air mattresses in it and still have plenty of room for lots of other gear. There is a divider that you can hang in the middle and essentially make the back area a sleeping room and the front a covered sitting area if you want, or divide it into two separate sleeping areas.

Construction: The tent is well constructed, but does not have the usual "bathtub" fabric on the bottom. A ground cover/tarp is a must, since the floor is made of the same material as the sides. The rain-fly openings are somewhat of a hassle, since they can only be closed from the outside. The inside zipper also does not match up with the rain fly zipper, so it's a little more work to get in and out of the tent when the rain fly is closed than most tents are. The big openings on the rain fly have very good tiebacks though, so when you have them open they stay out of the way.

Weather: This tent vents VERY WELL in the heat. The entire thing is basically mesh underneath the rain fly, and there are big openings in the front and a smaller window in the back so the air flows through it well when it's all opened up. As for the rain, we sealed the seams on our tent before we went camping with it, and we did not get wet. There were a couple of seams that leaked a little that we're going to reseal, but they were small and in unimportant places. We did encounter some very strong winds on our trip, and we are working with the warranty department to get some replacement parts. The poles bent a little bit and the "pocket" where the pole in the rain fly hooks in ripped. These winds, however, were a part of a severe weather system and lesser winds have not caused any damage to the tent.

Verdict: This is a great family tent and provides lots of space and more than adequate shelter. There are a few design flaws, but they are nothing more than a small annoyance. If it is very windy, however, your best bet is to take the tent down.

"still a good hammock tent" 2010-05-13
By Ron PA
I bought one of these about 10 years ago and used it frequently but the grommets are pulling loose so I just bought another.

Compared to the older one, the new one's hammock fabric seems about half the thickness and is now very slippery-(annoying); the steel end rings where all the lines join are replaced by loops of rope; the rain fly zipper is gone and you have to slip under the fly to unzip the mesh and enter and then try to reattach the velcro from inside-(annoying) and the mesh zipper is flimsier so I needed to use both hands to close it instead of just one in the older tent; the three piece fiberglass tent poles are replaced by shock corded aluminum ones and the sleeves are almost continuous instead of a bunch of separate loops-(great improvements); the rainflys brass hooks are now plastic, there's an extra storage pocket and a light-loop above your head; new camo pattern, a few strap tabs along one side to clip a foam mat to-(leak source);

The slipperiness is very annoying and I'm considering thinning some seam sealer and painting stripes across the hammock.

I was in it through some heavy thunderstorms and like the old one the seam joining the top and bottom curves up to form a gutter which somehow collects water and I saw water drops forming on the short nylon strap pieces inside and rolling down the bottom, wetting my sleeping bag in the butt area. I had a similar problem with the old one but since I'm almost never in rain that intense, I never tried seam sealing the area. Lighter rain was never a problem.

Using it as a bivy, I side sleep and my shoulder presses against the roof, so I only use it as a hammock tent.

I'm sticking with this hammock tent because of its simplicity, even though it's a bit heavy/bulky. I just wrap 1"x18' cam-straps around trees and through the end loops and tension them and insert the poles and sometimes put on the rainfly. Hennesys require a complicated mess of straps, lines and stakes and took one guy I was camping with a long time to get right and then one of the kids blundered into a guy line and tore a loop loose from his tarp.

 "Awesome Product!" 2010-04-07
By W. Johnson
I have used many camping hammocks through the years and must say that this one is by far the best! It is extremely comfortable, easy to use, has bug netting, comes with rainfly that attaches to the hammock so you don't have to run extra lines all over the place. It can also be used on the ground as a "regular" tent. I am approx. 6'3" and over 200lbs and felt like I had plenty of room. I was hesitant to purchase but glad I did...highly recommend! I had a few questions and the customer service was awesome. Going to purchase a few more for friends/family.

 "Excellent camping hammock" 2010-01-06
By P. S. Jones
There are definitely some advantages to hammock camping such as being off the ground and not sleeping on a hard surface. I have no trouble with sleeping in the Lawson Hammock, but I have discovered a few setbacks about hammock camping in general. If privacy is required to change clothes, changing inside the hammock is tough but doable. You don't really have an area to store your gear while camping and especially while sleeping that a tent provides. It is extremely difficult to cold weather camp using a hammock. The process of positioning yourself in the hammock in a closed sleeping bag is tough due to the slick surfaces of both the nylon hammock and the bag. The fact of being suspended in the air (cold air)on a compressed sleeping bag does not allow the camper to retain body heat as compared to sleeping on a closed cell pad. To best use the Lawson Hammock as a bivy, the camper needs to be smaller than 6' and really a lean individual as the suspended roominess disappears once the hammock is on the ground.

All that being said, I'm still glad I bought the hammock. I will gladly use it in spring/fall conditions where sleeping under a bag or blanket will suffice. I did have an aluminum pole to snap which was replaced with no squabble under warranty.

"Best tent I've ever owned, just wish it was a little bigger." 2010-02-17
By T. Greathead (Los Angeles, CA)
I bought this tent after having multiple conversations with the company owner. He was incredibly nice and helped me understand every little detail about the tent. After getting all the info I was sure: this is possibly the most well thought out tent ever designed.

You've read all about the integrated poles and quick setup, which are all true, so I'll skip those and get to the stuff people don't mention. Like the gear vestibules next to the door that can be accessed from inside or outside, perfect for dirty shoes or as a 'laundry basket.' Genius. Or the unbelievably high number of storage pockets inside (the usual small keys/wallet pocket on one side, the loooong pocked for jackets, hats, gloves, etc. on the other side AND the small 'basket' up top that is perfect for placing a flashlight or glowstick for light. Most other companies even charge for that top basket as an accessory, ridiculous!

I will agree that the bathtub floor can get messy in less than dry weather. I usually lay down a super cheap tarp or something just to separate the ground in that case, you can get packs of them for a couple bucks.

As for the storage bag, I completely agree its too small, like every other tent bag in existence (how come no one's figured this out yet?) But the answer I came up with that works great is a compression sack! I had to look hard but finally found one that has horizontal cinch straps (as opposed to the usual vertical) so I can stuff everything in there and cinch it down afterward.

My only real gripe about the tent that can't be fixed is the size. I'm 6'1" and with the tall sleeping bag and air pad I use my feet and head hit the walls. When I'm alone I sleep at an angle but with my wife it gets too snug for my liking. And don't even get me started about my 8 month old; tent hog! ;)

However I just discovered El Dorado now makes a bigger version which I am literally about to buy so I figured I'd review this tent before I retired it.

That's it, all in all pretty much the best tent I've ever owned.

 "Camping Made Easy" 2010-01-22
By M. White
This is a great tent, well designed and sturdy. It sets up EASY , even in the dark!! So far this tent has gone thru hail , freezing rain , high winds and snow. The full fly is a big plus. Any dirt that is on the bottom of the tent will make the tent walls dirty , because of the way the tent fold up. The bath tub floor to the tent is great , but still bring a tarp. This tent has made it much easier to enjoy camping!!!

 "Excellent Tent, Very Efficient!!!!" 2010-01-20
By Misty D. Brown (Colorado)
I love this tent! I can set this tent up and take it down in a matter of minutes. It's very user friendly, light, and has a lot of great pockets! I especially love the front pockets that allow you access to the inside of tent, great for muddy shoes and for easy access. We take this tent camping and friends are very jealous of our setup and tear down time! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a durable, efficient tent with multiple pockets, room for 2-3, and easy to use!

 "Almost too easy" 2009-12-16
By Sue (Boston, MA USA)
If you are used to fussing with poles for a half an hour when you arrive at your campsite in the dark, you won't know what to do with the extra 29 1/2 minutes you have after you set up this tent. Seriously-- so easy, it feels like you are cheating. This tent is great for two. Lots of features make it practical for all of your three season, car-camping needs. Would recommend it highly.

 "GREAT TENT" 2009-12-14
By EDWARD J. GILSON Jr. (PA)
I have been tent camping for well over 20 years and nothing is more exasperating to me than fitting tent poles into keys. My experience has always been that the pole is full of dirt and the key won't go in. A small Swiss Army knife or a nail is then required to clear the hole so the key can be inserted. Needless to say, it is usually raining or snowing or dark when I am fumbling with this. After my last experience like this I resoved to find a tent with pockets for the poles to be inserted. This is quite a task in this price range. Most if not all Coleman tents have the key system. I checked in Cabelas, Campmor, REI, and stores like Dicks. Then I saw this model. For the price you cannot beat it. I have camped in summer and winter, rain and snow, and this tent has more than met the test. I should have bought two and I may yet.

"Don't procrastinate! Buy sealant before the big trip!" 2009-10-26
By MaggieMay (Tennessee)
We bought this tent as a replacement to our older tent, and we took it out on its inaugural camping trip this weekend. Of the three day trip, only one day was wet and rainy. Although unpleasant, I'm glad it rained that day because we now know that this tent MUST be water sealed before our next trip.

I've had a lot of car camping experience, and I've purchased Wenzel products in the past. The layout and size of this tent were consistent with what I was used to. The roomy interior, ample ventilation and ease of assembly were definite positives. There is more than enough room for two adults with large sleeping bags. There's an inside pocket for storing lightweight items, and there's a mesh net that can be hooked on the top of the tent for more storage. Basically, this tent was what I expected--low-frills, easy set-up, comfortable and roomy.

Unfortunately, we didn't waterproof or seal the seams before our excursion. Big mistake! Trust me, take the time before your trip to purchase and administer the sealant and waterproofer. Trust me. The third day of our trip, it rained constantly from sunrise until roughly 4 p.m. The rain was heavy and steady, and for a while, the tent held up nicely. Eventually, though, the material became saturated with water and began to leak. (We put a tarp down under the tent, so we didn't encounter any problems with seepage.) Had we taken the time to prepare the tent beforehand, I don't think we would have run into this problem.

I'm not holding the tent accountable for our laziness, which is why I'm giving it an overall score of 4.

 "Just as described - a basic tent that isn't a pain to set-up" 2009-09-19
By K. Smith (Chicago, IL)
I wanted a cheap, easy set-up style tent for a few nights spent outdoors. This was my first time sleeping outside so I can't say if the tent would be good for a serious camper, but for what I wanted it was perfect. The assembly process was straightforward and took very little time.

The only negative is that the tent really is not a four person tent. I think it would be quite cramped with four occupants. Two of us slept in the tent and found that it was just the right size for sleeping and storing our belongings.
