"still a good hammock tent" 2010-05-13
By Ron PA
I bought one of these about 10 years ago and used it frequently but the grommets are pulling loose so I just bought another.

Compared to the older one, the new one's hammock fabric seems about half the thickness and is now very slippery-(annoying); the steel end rings where all the lines join are replaced by loops of rope; the rain fly zipper is gone and you have to slip under the fly to unzip the mesh and enter and then try to reattach the velcro from inside-(annoying) and the mesh zipper is flimsier so I needed to use both hands to close it instead of just one in the older tent; the three piece fiberglass tent poles are replaced by shock corded aluminum ones and the sleeves are almost continuous instead of a bunch of separate loops-(great improvements); the rainflys brass hooks are now plastic, there's an extra storage pocket and a light-loop above your head; new camo pattern, a few strap tabs along one side to clip a foam mat to-(leak source);

The slipperiness is very annoying and I'm considering thinning some seam sealer and painting stripes across the hammock.

I was in it through some heavy thunderstorms and like the old one the seam joining the top and bottom curves up to form a gutter which somehow collects water and I saw water drops forming on the short nylon strap pieces inside and rolling down the bottom, wetting my sleeping bag in the butt area. I had a similar problem with the old one but since I'm almost never in rain that intense, I never tried seam sealing the area. Lighter rain was never a problem.

Using it as a bivy, I side sleep and my shoulder presses against the roof, so I only use it as a hammock tent.

I'm sticking with this hammock tent because of its simplicity, even though it's a bit heavy/bulky. I just wrap 1"x18' cam-straps around trees and through the end loops and tension them and insert the poles and sometimes put on the rainfly. Hennesys require a complicated mess of straps, lines and stakes and took one guy I was camping with a long time to get right and then one of the kids blundered into a guy line and tore a loop loose from his tarp.

 "Awesome Product!" 2010-04-07
By W. Johnson
I have used many camping hammocks through the years and must say that this one is by far the best! It is extremely comfortable, easy to use, has bug netting, comes with rainfly that attaches to the hammock so you don't have to run extra lines all over the place. It can also be used on the ground as a "regular" tent. I am approx. 6'3" and over 200lbs and felt like I had plenty of room. I was hesitant to purchase but glad I did...highly recommend! I had a few questions and the customer service was awesome. Going to purchase a few more for friends/family.

 "Excellent camping hammock" 2010-01-06
By P. S. Jones
There are definitely some advantages to hammock camping such as being off the ground and not sleeping on a hard surface. I have no trouble with sleeping in the Lawson Hammock, but I have discovered a few setbacks about hammock camping in general. If privacy is required to change clothes, changing inside the hammock is tough but doable. You don't really have an area to store your gear while camping and especially while sleeping that a tent provides. It is extremely difficult to cold weather camp using a hammock. The process of positioning yourself in the hammock in a closed sleeping bag is tough due to the slick surfaces of both the nylon hammock and the bag. The fact of being suspended in the air (cold air)on a compressed sleeping bag does not allow the camper to retain body heat as compared to sleeping on a closed cell pad. To best use the Lawson Hammock as a bivy, the camper needs to be smaller than 6' and really a lean individual as the suspended roominess disappears once the hammock is on the ground.

All that being said, I'm still glad I bought the hammock. I will gladly use it in spring/fall conditions where sleeping under a bag or blanket will suffice. I did have an aluminum pole to snap which was replaced with no squabble under warranty.

By M. Albert
I used the big cot this past summer. it performed quite well and was comfortable. assembly the first time proved a challenge but it went smoothly. the nights i used it kept me dry as it poured both nites !shipping i felt was quite expensive (one half the cost of the cot)!!this is a rather large cot, so make certain it will fit in your tent..

 "This cot is HUGE!!!" 2007-12-21
By K. Draper (oklahoma)
I am an average-sized female, and this cot could easily hold a very large person, but I bought it for the exta width. The cot is light-wieght and folds up nicely into a green carrying case. To assemble, first you unfold the main part, then you attach the four aluminium tubular legs. This was a bit of a challenge with one of the legs, because I couldn't get the tube to line up with the pipe at first, but it may be easier the next time I set it up. The fabric is a heavy-duty green material. I laid on it to test it out, and it produced some sounds whenever I moved around or turned over. I think that this will get better, too. I am a very picky sleeper which is why I purchased the widest cot available, and I am going to place a good-quality foam pad on top of it, too.

 "Travel Hammock Rocks!" 2009-05-13
By D. Darling (North Carolina)
The Travel Hammock is lightweight, strong and easy to set up. It comes with an attached stuff sack that easily stores the hammock, included ropes, extra carabiners (not included), and hammock straps (not included). The included ropes are very strong. Overall I'm very impressed with the quality of this hammock, especially at this price!

The hammock stores at about the size of a honeydew melon. Great option for hammock camping with a partner, if you trek in a lightweight tarp or there's no chance of rain. Light and small enough to take along backpacking as a lounge option. Good buy!

"Broken Hooks = Bruised Tails" 2009-01-23
By Michael L. Cornelison (Millbrook, AL United States)
I was very exited to get this hammock and at such a great price. However, the excitement ended about the same time my two small boys and I hit the ground. I got the double that says it is rated and tested for 400 pounds and pictures on on the box show two adults relaxing in it. The three of us (boys 4 and 7) are just over 300. After it fell, and I made sure we were not seriously hurt, I began looking for the break and found that one of the S hooks in the included hanging kit had broken. On further inspection I also found cracks in the other one. When I contacted the company all they did was send me more hammocks but never addressed the problem. IF YOU BUY THIS ITEM REPLACE HOOKS BEFORE YOU GET IN IT. By The Way, the company has changed it's name to Grand Trunk. Same people, same S-Hooks.

 "I prefer a stuff sack" 2010-02-13
By Scott P. Smith (Marietta, GA)
I bought a pair of these for my Hennessy hammock. I tried them, but I think I prefer using a stuff sack. Using the snakeskin takes up more space than a stuff sack. But if you attach it to the outside of your pack, that probably does not matter. I did not like the way the snake skins bunch up at the ends of the hammock. It makes using the hammock in tight spots a little harder. I tried to put both the tarp and hammock into the snake skins. That works, but if you do that, you can't easily put the tarp on a separate line (running above the hammock), the way you see in the pictures. So all-in-all I would not recommend it, but your mileage may very. I have heard some people strongly endorse the snakeskins, but after using them, I do not understand why.

"Essential part of the Hennessy" 2009-08-10
By Reginald M. Dela Cruz
If you have a Hennessy hammock or other bundled hammocks this is an indispensable piece of gear. It cuts setup and take down time in half. Which is a pretty amazing feat since setup is already simple. I am able to roll up the hammock, rainfly, and even stash the tent stakes inside of the snakeskin. I wrap the treehuggers and excess rope tightly around the whole thing making it an extremely compact lightweight sleeping unit.

The best part is the snakeskins are waterproof so you can wrap it around your pack or hook it to the outside and not worry about it getting wet.

 "Hands On Review" 2009-09-12
By C. Hoang
I Purchased this product and it shipped on time, the only thing that I didn't like about it was the instructions printed on the carrying bag were not very good. I went to a wilderness trip with with friends who were carrying tents. For a wooded area, this is item is ideal. Easy and fast setup and it was very comfortable sleep because the weight of my body (200lbs) was evenly distributed. The velcro entrance was a concern in the beginning but it was very convenient hopping in and after I laid down the velcro sinched really well. My friends had a hard time finding flat ground to setup and they said their backs did not feel good afterwards. This hammock is ideal for a forest but if you're going to a prarie/grassland or a place with out a lot of trees you would be better off with a tent. The mosquito net works great.

 "Coolness (literally)" 2009-07-06
By W. Hinsch (Columbia, SC USA)
If most of your camp sites will have trees or if you want to "stealth" camp off the trail and away from camp sites, this is the way to go. I've tried various mattresses and such trying to get comfortable on the ground. However, since I'm not a spring chicken and I carry a little more avoirdupois than some, those pressure points are miserable. Also, I generally don't sleep well on my back.

This shelter solved both issues. First, I can sleep on my side if I want to and there are no pressure points. However, depending on my angle in the hammock, it is just as easy to sleep on my back. It is like sleeping in a very soft recliner leaned most of the way back.

The bottom fabric and rain fly are both somewhat translucent (like a green shower door), and of course you can see clearly out of the sides with the no-see-um netting on top of the hammock. In a pitch black forest with lightning bugs all around, it was simply magical. Not wanting to miss a moment of that display was the only thing that kept me awake, then I slept like a baby.

The notes about cold are spot on. On a 50 degree night with a 40 degree sleeping bag, I was just on the verge of being uncomfortably cold underneath. There are various work-arounds, including using a mattress (which seems to defeat some of the ultralight advantages). The company even sells a kit that is supposed to turn this into a true four-season shelter. I'll try the inexpensive and lightweight workarounds first.

I've seen competing products for less money. However, some were nothing more than a camouflage-colored regular hammock made out of cheap nylon with no netting or rain fly. For overall quality, comfort, flexibility, and ease of use, you'll have a hard time going wrong with this product. If it doesn't work out for your style of backpacking or camping, you could set it up in the yard and have an outstanding bug-free hammock there.

"You will never want to sleep in a tent anymore!" 2006-09-11
By Erika Sohn (Mexico City)
Great product. Lightweight, compact and guaranteed to give you a great night's sleep. I have used a Hennessey Hammock (ultralight asym) for several years

on backpacking and caving trips. It is a great, durable and tough product! Contrary to what many people might think, sleeping in a hammock, especially a Hennessey Hammock, is a great experience. You will never wake up with a sore back again. This hammock is roomy (due to an asymmetric geometry), won't leak and you can set it up in about two minutes, any place where there are two anchor points (I've used my jeep's roll bars and a tree). You will be able to pitch your hammock where no tent would ever fit (on slopes, in caves, over uneven ground, etc) and it allows you to escape crowded camping grounds. In case there are no anchors, you can pitch it as a bivy using two trekking poles although, in this case, a ground cloth would be preferable, since the hammock fabric is not waterproof.

The tarp can be set up in different ways depending on weather conditions and I have never had a drop of rain inside my hammock in many rainy nights.

One thing has to be considered when sleeping in a hammock in cold conditions: your back gets cold, so don't forget your sleeping pad or a lightweight dashboard sunshield for warmer nights.

The hammock is enclosed with noseeum netting and is entered from the bottom, as you transfer your weight to the hammock, a velcro closure seals the entrance from all kinds of critters.

Another great thing is that the hammock has a small pocket hanging from an internal "clothesline'' that also serves as a tension line for the netting. You will not damage the trees you hang from, since the hammock comes with 1 inch polypro webbings attached to the lines.

There are two features I would like this hammock to have: a removable netting for hot, critterless nights and a larger tarp for cooking in rainy conditions.

My hammock has displaced my tents, especially on backpacking trips.

You will not regret having bought this hammock... I Love it!

this hammock is amazing. it's so comfortable and durable. i've set it up both inside and out, and i LOVE it.

it doesn't look like it should hold up, but it does. also, the extra fabric makes a great covering if it's a little chilly. given the choice between a thermarest and a sleeping bag and an eno, i'd sleep in the eno. all my friends who have one love it as well.

you don't have to buy the straps that eno also sells if you or someone you know knows how to make some.

all in all, it's a wonderful product, great for the outdoor lover.

"I could LIVE in this hammock" 2009-12-30
By D. Nelson (Milwaukee, WI)
I bought this hammock after my brother got into hammock-camping. I only use it for one person, but because it's wider than a single nest, after I add a sleeping pad and my sleeping bag and camping pillow, there is plenty of fabric on the sides to protect me from breeze, or just make me feel like a caterpillar :) I slept in this for a week straight on one camping trip, with a rain fly set up for wind, rain & falling branch protection. I quickly discovered that if it's raining and you lay in the hammock to read & stay dry, it's IMPOSSIBLE to stay awake. It's incredibly relaxing, and this model is very well built. I just bought a second one for my fiance's christmas gift - no more tents!!

I purchased this hammock for my son, who is a college student. He loves it! He no longer takes a tent camping, just his ENO and slap straps (I recommend the slap straps pro).  "Don't be fooled by seeing double." 2009-09-18
By Vanessa Brown
While this is a great hammock in itself, it doesn't do so well holding two people, unless you're conjoined twins or like being really, really close to someone and I mean really close. My fiance bought the double nested hammock and after we tied it out together for about as long as we could stand be swished together, he decided that he would return this one and we would both get our own hammocks. The double nested hammock has the capacity limits of holding the weight of two people, but doesn't seem to be designed for two people to sleep comfortably in it. Don't let the pictures fool you, it's just a regular hammock with extra fabric. Besides that, everything else about the ENO is great!
