"Great Tent! Eureka Grand Manan 9" 2010-03-28
By Weatherly (USA)
The Eureka Grand Manan 9 provides excellent ventilation, and it has window covers that offer privacy without restricting air flow. The privacy is essential at campgrounds where you have neighbors. The pole sleeves do make it slower to set up the tent, but the sleeves are there for a reason. Security, stability. When you look at photos of true mountaineering tents you will see that they all have pole sleeves rather than clips to secure the tent to the poles. The sleeves help stabilize the poles to keep your tent upright in heavy winds and heavy-weight drenching rains. After the storm you will be grateful that you had pole sleeves as you observe your neighbors staring aghast at their collapsed pole-clipped tents. The Grand Manan's mesh windows have covers that tie on rather than zip on. They will not retain interior warmth on cold days, but this is consistent with many tents on the market these days that have entire walls made of mesh; however, the other tents do not offer privacy covers over the mesh. The rain fly covers all the openings including the windows to offer a layer of warmth just as other tents do. Remember to place a thin drop cloth underneath the tent next to the ground, and position it so the edges do not stick out from under the tent. I always use a heavier tarp inside the tent to cover the tent floor to protect it from boots, and to help keep it clean. Note that the photo of this tent's cousin, Grand Manan 7, is not correct. The rain fly cannot form an awning on the Grand Manan 7, at least not on the earliest versions of that model. Also, any tent manufacturer's estimate of how many people fit comfortably in any tent should be accepted with a grain of salt. Usually only one-half of that number of folks will fit comfortably, and 2 very young children count as 1 adult. I currently own 3 Eureka tents of various sizes, and I would buy the Grand Manan 9 again. (All of my tents have at least partial pole sleeves for stability.) I even recommended the Grand Manan 9 to a friend who was looking for family tent.

"Buy it for your family" 2009-11-21
By Mark Lydic
I bought this tent because Eureka makes one the best tents on the market and this one supports that through and through. My family has grown by 2 since the last time me and my wife went camping. We needed a tent to hold four but not take up the campsite and this one was it. What I like about it is everything. The vestibules are huge and covered very well, the ventilation is outstanding, I spent a night in it in 30 deg weather during an outing with some friends and lived to give this review, have not spent a night in the rain but the seams are sealed and the material is coated so I'm not worring about it. I also bought two full size air matresses from Coleman and they fit perrfectly with room at the foot for gear and standig up to get dressed (I'm 6'-5").

If you are looking for a great quality tent for your family buy this one and you will be quite satisfied.

One thing though I found was the door zipper was tight in one spot and the tent needed to stretch out a little, so be careful the first time you open the doors you dont damage the zipper.

 "Fit My Needs" 2009-08-26
By Benjamin Wiles
I've had several tents over the years and have come up with a few must haves for a car camping tent. They include a full fly, low and high windows for proper ventilation, privacy in the form of zippered or paneled windows, and a tent I could stand in. Since I was looking for a car camping tent, weight wasn't a concern. The Grand Manan is the only tent I could find under $250 that fit my needs.

The Manan weighs in at just over 20 pounds and feels like it. The tent comes in a large stuff sack and holding it by the drawstring part of the sack made me feel like I was putting too much pressure on the sack. I will probably replace the stuff sack with a duffel bag. The packed up tent is bulky though (11"X25") and takes up more space than I expected.

I setup the tent at home before heading out on our first trip. The only problem I encountered when setting up the tent was with one of the tent sleeves. The segment of one of the sleeves at the apex of the tent is just a bit too tight and you have to force each ferrule through. It's a little frustrating because it is easy to pull the pole apart when setting up and taking down the tent. Also, the tension of the cord in the poles is very loose. Taken together setting up and taking down is a little more tedious than it should be. I will probably shorten the cord to make it tighter somewhere along the way.

The pole issue not withstanding, the construction of the tent seems to be pretty solid. The zippers work well and do not get caught up in the fabric. I am 5'9 and can easily stand in the center of the tent and walk around without hitting the roof for a few feet on either side of the tent's peak. The entire rainfly is seal seamed along with the floor of the tent. I used a small tube of Seam Grip to finish the perimeter of the tent as well as some panels on the roof. This took about 2 hours of work. I did notice that some of the stitching was a little off though. Some stitching that should have been doubled over to hide the edge of the fabric was sticking out. I don't think that it will affect the use of the tent but some stitching looked a little messy.

I first used the Manan on a two night stay at Cape Henlpen in Delaware. My fiancé and I were able to put the tent together in under 10 minutes. Having setup the tent at home really helped. One thing that is easy to overlook is that the fly has poles that have to be inserted into it before you set the fly. We used an 8X10 tarp as a footprint, with the excess two feet of tarp under one of the entrances. We used this space to store sandals and a towel to wipe our feet of sand.

I particularly enjoyed all the ways one can vent the tent. You can pull back portions of the fly to funnel air into the tent if there is a breeze or raise the sides of the fly for full ventilation. While full mesh tents are nice when backpacking, they can be a pain in campgrounds when your closest neighbor is only 50 feet away and can easily catch a glimpse of your significant other when changing. This usually means that the fly is left on 100% of the time which reduces the usefulness of all the mesh. The Manan overcomes this by using panels that are attached to the inside of the mesh windows with toggles. Want full venting? Undo two toggles and you have almost and entire wall of mesh. Need privacy? Attach the toggles. Zippered windows would have been nicer but I assume the panels are a cost cutting measure. This could be an issue during the colder months when air can rush past the sides of the panels. I doubt it will be a problem for me.

The waterproof test of tent happened on our second night when we had a full 12 hours of heavy rain resulting from the remnants of a hurricane. This was probably one of the worst case scenarios the tent will ever face. We knew it was likely to rain heavily, so we staked the tent out and guyed out the fly to some trees. About 20 minutes into the rain, I noticed some drops on the tent below the rain venting flaps. Even though it was not windy, the splashing of the rain on the fly caused some drops to splash into the tent. I closed the vent flaps and the drops stopped.

An hour later, I found a few drops dripping from the web pockets on the rain fly into the vestibule. This is where the poles are inserted in the fly to create the vestibule. This wasn't a big deal since the drops weren't coming into the tent and all we had in the vestibule were sandals. I will probably have to add seam sealer to the area around the webbing.

Finally, around 8 hours into the rain I felt pockets or water below the tent floor. Somehow water had gotten between the tarp and the tent floor. I figured the floor was waterproof enough and just ignored it. By the next day, the entire floor was wet. There weren't any puddles but the water had overwhelmed the floor and seeped into the tent.

It took a little work to figure out what went wrong. First let me say that I like using a footprint with my car camping tents. This is for cleanliness and to extend the life of the floor. I used an 8'X10' tarp so that the tarp would be smaller than 3 sides of the tent by several inches and then the long part of the tarp could be used as a door mat under the vestibule. What happened was that it was raining so much that the rain was forming small puddles where the fly met the ground. Unfortunately rain would splash off the puddles and hit the side of the tent. Fortunately they hit just an inch or two from where the mesh begins. But the rain would drip down the side of the tent and be drawn between the tent floor and the tarp. At first I blamed the tarp for the failure. But remember that the footprint Eureka offers for this tent is 9X9 and would have extended further than what I used. The only thing I can think of is that I should have tried to get the fly to come closer to the ground. I'm not sure how easily I will be able to do that next time. I don't blame Eureka for the failure but I think that the fly should probably be as long as it is in front of the doors, and touch the ground.

I am completely satisfied with the tent even though I still do not know how I will overcome the rain from dripping between the floor and tarp. It may be that if it starts to rain really hard, I will just pull the tarp out. I may even just use a tarp to protect only the area where most of out time in the tent is spent- the inner 7'X7' area. Besides sealing the webbing and possibly shortening the pole cord I think I'll be enjoying the tent for some years to come.

 "Thin and overpriced" 2009-11-13
By Max Grabowski
Since the price is high, my expectation was that it would be thick and solid fabric. It is extremely thin which you feel all little rocks and cracks in the ground. It does not rip and appears to be strong but it is overpriced. I also have a similar size tarp that I purchased 9 years ago for $35 which offers much better protection and support.

 "Quick and Comfortable" 2009-10-27
By J. Idso (Seattle, WA.)
The Uinta has great appeal for a quick-stop of one night or 3 or 4. Set-up is quick and easy, with or without stakes, (but they're recommended). Windy or rainy conditions with guy-outs and the fly take considerably longer, but it's still quick. I don't yet know about wet conditions, but the deep tub floor looks good. In fact, the whole tent looks good, from inside or out. My only other quick-set was a Camel SST, which was both smaller and hot and stuffy, except under cool conditions. This company's logo is a camel. Hmmmmm. If it's the same people, they hit a home run with this new one.

It's well laid out, with a roomy square floor footprint and a modified dome. The "front porch" apron and well-hooded door are nice. I have always divided by two when it comes to the number of people comfortably accomodated, and this tent is no different, but two should find more comfort and convenience than average for this type of tent.

There is plenty of ventilation, fully adjustable for conditions. First trip out was to Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows in later September. Rain fly off and everything open for warm (even hot), days, then fly on for cold nights. The "no-seeum" mesh is effective for the casual glance. Crowded conditions likely will not feel too intrusive. Seeing out is easy and fun, especially at night. Seeing in is difficult.

I found this tent to be very comfortable. However, layering has something to do with it. I start with a conventional ground sheet, then add a layer of overlaping "space blankets", aluminized side down. This helps protect against moisture and cold ground. Then goes the tent, followed by an inside liner and/or an indoor-outdoor area rug. These are recommended for anyone and any tent. Your floors will last a lot longer. You will be more comfortable. Pitching and striking can be arduous, which this tent makes easier, but it's worth it. Sirius helps, too.

Great 3-season tent. The folks in Chicago did well.

"Coolest Tent i've ever owned!" 2009-01-15
By The Llama (Chicago, IL)
This is by far the greatest family/car camping tent i have ever owned and i've owned a few. I only say car camping because it's really big (which is nice) and weighs a little too much for hard core backpacking. You could hike in with it, but wouldn't want to take it on a thru hike.

That being said, this thing is amazing. I pulled it out, unfolded the legs, lifted up and pushed the center piece together and my tent was up. My wife turned around and couldn't believe it, my job was done! Before bed we put the rain fly on and again, what a great piece of gear. Complete "FULL" coverage and so fast and easy to use, each corner has a snap buckle and it was on. Plus, the front porch area is HUGE. The perfect place for our wet shoes and other gear.

Not sure what else to say, but you won't be dissapointed.

 "Great Tent" 2009-11-07
By P. Miller
I took this tent on a three month road trip across most of North America. It held up in the wind in the Grand Canyon (60mph that night!!), the hail at Yellowstone National Park, the rain in Denali National Park, the 106 degree weather in the Badlands and the freezing cold weather in the deserts of New Mexico. One night a little rain water seeped into the bottom of the tent, granted it was a torrential downpour and we were basically in a puddle...I got some sealant and sealed all of the seams of the tent and we also had to seal the seams on the back ventilation window located on the fly due to dripping. Other than that little bump and the occasional condensation (the tent doesn't breathe spectacularly) the Grand Mesa held it's own and comfortably fit a queen sized air mattress and two adults. The strange thing however is the footprint designed specifically for this tent seems a bit small. I'm sure there is a reason for this but it was a little tricky sometimes deciding to stake it and pull it taut or leave it as is.

I've never put another tent to the test in so many varying weather situations but this tent held its own and was a worthwhile investment.

This tent is great. We have used this for 2 camping trips, a total of 10 nights so far. We, slept 3, including a queen size mattress. It sets up very quickly and is very light. We did have some rain, but absolutely no leaks. The bottom is pretty thin, so I am glad we bought the footprint. I will use this for backpacking with my son.

"Nice Tent for the price - But..." 2009-07-13
By David M. Pierce
I do not recommend this tent for camping anyplace where you might encounter blowing sand or dust. Unlike many dome tents, the mesh windows in this tent are NOT equipped with zip-up panels - so there is no way to "batten down the hatches" and keep the dust out during a blow. Kelty probably decided to go this route to keep weight down, and to cut manufacturing costs enabling them to keep the tent priced low.

Stowed, the tent is light and compact. It is a joy to set up and take down - very quick and easy, and it feels spacious and airy even when the rain-fly is in place. I also like the large entry port - I don't have to crawl to get in or out like I do with some dome tents. It'll keep you dry and keep the bugs out, but the lack of a way to seal the mesh windows render it of limited use for someone like me who likes to camp in the desert sometimes.

 "GREAT TENT" 2009-06-18
By Matthew Clark Owens (Snowmass Village, CO)
I live in Aspen/Snowmass and go camping a lot. For two people... it's AWESOME! For 3 people it's great... even with gear. You can forget about 4 people... but isn't that why you buy a 4 person tent... to sleep 3 comfortable:-)?

Anyway... super easy assembly. I recommend putting a tarp underneath the tent to keep it in good condition and keep it dry.

Holds up in wind... rain... etc. The rain fly is great and gives you that extra space you need.

No complaints... great buy, super easy to set up, holds up in the weather.

For around $150... it's the best buy around.

Oh... this is not a winter tent... 3 seasons only.

 "Outstanding Tent" 2009-11-25
By TnVol (Tennessee)
This is the best backpacking tent I have ever owned. It is an awesome tent. This is a premium tent at a bargain price.

First use was in a terrible rain storm. It was raining when we hit the trail, raining when we set up camp, raining when we went to bed, and raining when we got up. The tent did not leak a drop. I did not seal the seams (I know I should) and I did not guy out the fly but the ventilation was fine. Very little condensation with me and my son in it. Have since used it several times in better weather and still love it.

The negatives are: I don't like entering the tent from the end, if you and your buddy are not real close, this is a one man tent. Works well for me and my son but I can see one of us moving out in a few years.

Buy the footprint to go with it.

"great tent at a good price" 2009-11-09

This tent is all it claims to be, light weight, easy set-up and great ventilation for warmth without condensation build up. My 16 year old boy scout hiked 2 nights on the Appalachian Trail mid-October and was very satisfied with its performance. Looking forward to buying the footprint for this tent to complete the ease of set-up.

"Really Good Value Backpacking tent" 2009-11-09
By M. G. Thompson
I bought this tent to take backpacking and it has worked out just as I wanted. If you are someone not sure whether to buy a 1-person or 2-person tent this is a great compromise. Yes, there is enough room for 2, but for me and my gear it is perfect. The vestibule is a decent size, and I "could" keep my pack out there, but its nice having everything right next to you inside. At a little over 4 lbs its light enough to carry all day, and when you finally stop to set up camp there's no claustrophobic sack to crawl into. A couple more gear loops would be nice, but there's plenty of room in the pockets at the front of the tent. When fully guyed out it seems to be very sturdy, although it's not supposed to be a mountaineering tent. The floor seems a little thin to me (a positive when it comes to weight), but I cut my own ground cloth from a $4 tarp and don't have to worry about punctures to the floor.

For the price, and with all the features this tent offers I could not find a better deal anywhere (and I tried). As long as you have realistic expectations for how you will use this tent it will be a great home away from home. This was my first kelty tent... but probably won't be my last. I am very satisfied with it.

 "A Great Value" 2009-10-20
By A Reader (TX USA)
I've used this tent on about a dozen campouts. It's performed well in rain, heat and cold. In my opinion it is one of the best value tents around - performing as well as tents that cost twice as much. At just over 4 pounds, it's light enough for backpacking. It keeps out the weather. The vestibule is large enough for one person's pack and shoes with some room left over to crawl out of the tent. And it vents pretty well, allowing most of the condensation to escape.

It's main downside is space. It is a bit too short for my 6'3" frame. My sleeping bag touches the back of the tent, causing it to collect condensation and get colder than normal in the winter. Also, it's a tight fit for two good-sized adults. Finally, it only has a single vestibule and exit. The vestibule is good for one person's gear, but not two.

If you're not too tall, and you're looking you looking for a solid, good-value tent for a single adult or possibly two kids, I think this would be hard to beat.

"Excellent tent for the money" 2009-10-01
By Shifty Eyed (Knoxville, TN)
When I was tent-shopping, my criteria for a tent was: 1.)something under 5lbs 2.)had to be around $100 3.)must have a good warranty. This tent met almost every one of these conditions (it actually cost $106).

I bought this tent because I enjoy back-country hiking and camping. The first time I used it was in the Ozark Mtns. and it performed almost as expected. I say "almost" because I did have one minor issue: The first night resulted in a heavy downpour of rain with lots of wind. The tent held up great, but the floor did allow some moisture inside. It appears that, if left untreated, the floor fabric will wick moisture through. This problem was easily remedied by water-proofing everything - problem solved.

Something else to consider is that this tent (as is the case with many others) is intended to be pitched on a footprint, or ground cover. The floor isn't built to withstand the abrasion and abuse of bare ground. I'm too cheap to spend $30 on a Kelty footprint, so I use a piece of Tyvek (moisture barrier). This is easily attainable at construction sites (just ask the workers if you can have a scrap from the window openings). You can also use part of an old winter pool cover.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with this tent.
