 "Good screen house, sub-standard tie-down rope" 2009-10-26

We have been very pleased with our screen house. It has withstood some pretty good rain storms so far.

The first of two suggestions I'd make would be to be prepared to replace all the tie-down rope. The rope that came with the screen house just disintegrated within the first two months (August and September) of it being up. We would see wear and then just watch it snap or fall apart in our hands. We went out and bought new 1/8" nylon rope (higher quality, larger diamter) to replace it. My second suggestion would be to get some "door-draft snakes" or other weighted objects to hold the flaps down. The bottom edge has a flap that rests on the ground or grass to prevent bugs, especially flying ones from sneaking inside under the bottom edge of the screens. We've found that they could stand to be weighted down to ensure the wind doesn't just lift the side and welcome the bugs in. Staking each side at it's mid-point also helped with this just didn't completely solve the problem. Some scrap fabric and small pebble-like rock from the local home-improvement store has been a decent solution for us.

Overall we are quite happy with the new addition to our back yard.

This is the best screen tent ( now referred to as an "arbor" ) of the several I have owned through the years. This tent goes up very easily by one in less than 5 minutes. The design elements are well thought out; all parts fit quickly and well. The tent, when up, fits tightly and provides solidity in wind and blowing rain. There is no gapping along the bottom edges due to excellent fit and an inside lip of tent fabric, a nice touch. This is a quality purchase at a great price. The elements actually fit in the storage bag after use.

I was pleasantly surpise with this screen tent for the price. It was assembled/disassembled easily. Although I used my own tent stakes. I never use tent stakes provided with tents that I purchase. I use 10" galvanized nails that I purchase from Home Depot. The tent zippers worked very well. We had some windy days and wet nights. The tent stood sturdy in the wind. As I expected some things would get wet because it is a screen tent. The top of the tent though needs some water proofing. It did leak a little in some of the more heavy rains. So the stuff that I placed in the middle of the tent did get a little wet. Other than that it is a great product for the price and I would recomend this to others.

I purchased this product for a camping trip in the pacific northwest. The directions were very difficult to understand and we simply had to follow the pictures on the box. This shelter was to complement our tent at our site in the case of rain. We were informed that it was waterproof which was definitely a misrepresentation. The seams are not waterproofed and the tent leaked within an hour of having set it up. The rain was not even very heavy and would be described as a light drizzle. The zipper was always stuck and very difficult to zip and unzip with one hand. Also, when the tent was assembled, we could not zip the zipper all the way down which allowed many mosquitos and bees into the shelter. We set up the shelter on a sandy tent site. The sand apparently was trapped inside one of the mechanisms into which one inserts the poles and we could not take it apart. All in all, the product was a great disappointment and I would never recommend it for camping.

I gave this product a three because of the materials. This screen tent is made of fairly cheap materials. It would not stand up to any severe weather. Also I think the zippers on the doors will end up ripping after a few uses. the first time using it was on a camping trip and we ended up with severe rain the first night. Of course it was not meant to be waterproof so everything inside got wet but that was to be expected.



The good points to it are the ease of setting it up and it's size. It took me and my wife less than 15 minutes to get it set up.



If you buy this for shade and to keep the bugs out and you use it in normal weather it will work OK for you. But this is definitely not something you will be able to set up and leave it up all summer.

I bought this tent thinking that three season meant better quality. When I received it found out that it does not mean that at all. The poles were the cheapest quaility I had ever seen in a tent and the material was not much better. I have a cheap regular tent that I bought several years ago that is heavier but much better quality. I was hoping that this was a good deal but I guess it is like they say "you get what you pay for"

I saw a review of this tent on a website that said 'great for watching stars in the pacific northwest' and I was looking for a tent to take to the PNW that I could pack in a suitcase and lug around for a month.



I went with 3 friends we all brought tents with us and we stayed in 5 different places in 5 days, so I was an expert at setting up this tent and breaking it down. My friends both had expensive northface tents I set mine up in the same amount of time it took them to set theirs up. The instructions are not all that difficult if you are used to setting up a tent, it's quite simple really, one pole is shorter that one goes in the shorter side.



The only complaint I have is that the poles don't stay together as well as they should. When I got home I bent the metal connectors a little bit with a pair of pliers and they now stay together a lot better. I also haven't been in the rain with this tent yet so I don't know how well the rain fly works or if the bottom stays dry, it always makes me nervous to camp in a rain storm with a new tent.



My friends did make fun of all the zippers on this, the door has a zipper, it is on the outside, the screen has a zipper it is on the inside, and then the fly has a zipper, and there is a door on the other side too. so 6 zippers, I'm not saying it is a complaint it is just loud when trying to close everything up for the night.



So for the cost of this tent, it is easy to pack, easy to set up, and easy to lug around. And finally if you take this tent out to the Redwoods, or anywhere with a view of the sky, you will not get much sleep because you will want to stay up all night to watch the beautiful stars.

This is a great tent for the money but there are trade offs. After exhaustive researching for a suitable tent for backpacking\light camping I chose this model. The tent is relatively light at 5 pounds which makes it acceptable for backpacking, but the packed length is around 2ft which is a little long.

In addition to the other reviewer: #1 waterproofing - I have read many reviews on this tent and as long as you seal the seams, it works perfectly.

#2 Directions - They stink, way worse than what he said. Easiest method is this, pull out the 6 corners (leave some slack) and stake down. Extend your poles, you have two the same length and one smaller. Push through respective sleeves and insert through the staked rings. You can handle it from there just by looking at the picture, and also if you have another person helping you it would be great.

#3 Size - If you have ever bought a tent you know manufacturers purposely overstate their capacity. Two aduls can sleep some what comfortably and you could possibly squeeze in a young child but thats about it.

All in all one of the cheapest decent quality tents that you can buy. (Texsports website sells it for about twenty bucks more!)

If you are not a frequent camper (like me) this is a good tent for the price. It pretty much does the job and looks good, I like the mesh windows but I do have three complaints.



1. Unless you have your tent pitched on some canvas (as my friends did) it is going to get wet in the rain. I thought having a rain fly would solve any weather issues but it definitely doesn't. My tent and everything in it was soaked after a storm. Maybe that's just me not being the most educated camper but again I thought that maybe they should tell you that.



2. The instructions are the worst. They just are. The only advice I can give you is to mark your poles with a waterproof pen after you first set it up because each one has to go in a specific place, in a specific order and they don't really tell you so the first time you really have to struggle through it.



3. There is no way this is a 3-man tent, it just isn't. At most you could get a couple in the tent but even then you are going to be quite crowded if you have anything more than a backpack with you.



Final thoughts... it did the job and I didn't spend a fortune so even with the 3 complaints above I feel like I got what I needed out of it.

This is the best tent I've owned! It is a perfect size for two and all of the stuff you need--it advertises that it sleeps three but I don't see that happening unless it is 3 kids. We are 5'8" and 5'10" and had more than enough room for our hiking packs at our feet and other stuff at our heads. It is very lightweight and so quick and easy to put together! Our first trip using it was on the coast of Northern California. We used the rainfly over the top and it kept out most of the condensation/fog though the sides were a bit wet on the inside in the mornings. It kept us very warm and was so easy to travel with! My favorite part is the screened in skylight to watch the stars and feel that much closer to nature while keeping the bugs away.

We just came back from a 3-week camping trip in Northern Ontario. As you can imagine, it was cold and wet, and worth every minute.



I'll start with this: the product is amazing, made exceptionally well, with high-quality materials. Setup is easy and can be done by one person (with some experience). It is sturdy and makes our camping experience so much more enjoyable. It is, without question, worth the premium we paid for it.



This screen house did what it was supposed to do, and very well. We bought it because of the walls that could be dropped or raised depending on the weather. Naturally, most of the time the walls were down, and amazingly the thing didn't let in a single drop.



Below is the only somewhat negative points you may want to consider; I would still buy it if I knew about them beforehand, but I may have prepared better.



The awning was kept open at all times, with 3 poles supporting it; as other reviewers mentioned, it collects water; if it's raining hard, it becomes an issue, as the water collected becomes too heavy and may damage the tent. And as the water overflows and falls down periodically - it creates nasty puddles; and every time it splashes it soils everything nearby. Also - the awning leaks along the seam in the middle (actually, only in one spot). It's not a big deal, but it is annoying.



It is made of dark material, so it is dark inside. I would have preferred if it was white, it would have been much nicer and brighter during the day. However, it is brighter when the walls are raised. Also, it may be too warm inside in hot weather. Where we go hot weather isn't an issue :)



Overall - a great product, I can recommend it to anyone serious about camping. Its biggest strength is with waterproof walls that can be raised and dropped as needed. It creates an extra space on your campsite that is always dry and weatherproof. If, however, you're going to a place where it doesn't rain - you may be better off with bigger standard screenhouse.

It gets the job done, but it is quite large and bulky and is difficult for one person to set up. The snap-in floor just provides some ground covering and in no way prevents insects from entering the screen room. Unless you really need to cover a picnic table, I would recommend going with a largish regular tent like REI's hobbitat.

This screen house is the center of my big camp. I upgraded to this one after struggling in the rain with another, lesser quality screen house. The Northern Breeze is worth the extra cost. The walls/awnings provide shelter from the rain as well as additional privacy. It can be a little difficult for one person to assemble, but I've managed. It is very well designed. I've spent many hours in bad weather inside this and it is so nice to be able to reconfigure the awnings and walls. During extended rain, it is more comfortable and far less claustrophobic to set up an awning rather than keep all 4 walls down. However, If you set up the awning as pictured, it will pool with rain water. The water slopes back toward the tent and doesn't drain until it is really full... then it will dump. For better rain shedding, I only use two poles and set them with a long pole on the end, a short pole in the middle and only a guy line to stretch out the corner. This provides a proper slope and the rain drains to one side. A single set of awning poles (1 long & 2 short) is included, but you can order more directly from Eureka. Get at least one more long pole. I've been really happy with this and all of my Eureka tents. Happy Camping!

What a great purchase. Not only is it helping out w/ privacy due to the drop down sides but its working out great for our hot tub. You can either close all sides down while in it and its nice and warm or just open up two of them for a cross breeze. Assembly well it wasn't to bad as long as you have 2 people to do it, instructions where hard to find they were inside the bag that had the spikes in it which of course is the last bag you open up. Other than that its GREAT !!! We are actually taking it down and ordering the floor that comes w/ it and giving it to our daughter for her camping trip. Imagine that a product that allows you to do more than just one thing w/ it.

Great Screen Tent, I like the double entry exit feature and roll up privacy flaps/awnings. Zippers are good, usually one handed but on occasion will catch the cover. On the down side the roof seams need some kind of seam seal/silicone treatment as it did weep, not leak, water during a hard rain. One might want longer tent stakes too.

When I originally ordered this bag, it was out of stock. The seller was great about keeping my order until the bags were replenished, and it actually only took another week until it came in. There was a mis-hap in regards to someone overlooking my order, so my bag wasn't shipped out for another week or so beyond the wait time for their stock to be replenished, But I wasn't in dire need of the bag, and regardless I was very satisfied with my order. A tent's "footprint" is a sheet of nylon or plastic that goes underneath your tent. It's tailored to mirror the same shape as the floor of your tent. In olden days, we just called these things a "ground cloth."



Manufacturers make specific footprints for their tents because you want the footprint to be slightly smaller than the exact size of the tent. When you're camping out in the rain, you don't want water running down the side of the tent onto the footprint and then channeling it underneath the tent; you want the water runoff to go directly onto the ground.



This footprint by Kelty is made of the same fabric as that of the floor providing a second layer of fabric for protection of the underside of your tent from stones, twigs, mud, dirt and moisture. It's designed to be a sacrificial element because it is replaceable while your floor is not. This footprint comes packed in a mesh stuff sack.



One compelling reason to use a footprint is that it's much more convenient to lay out the footprint and visualize the ideal placement and orientation of your tent on a campsite. Then, clear the area underneath the footprint of sharp rocks and sticks, lay your tent on the footprint, stake it out with the poles to the attached grommets and follow through with the rest of tent setup.

The Eureka Grand Manan 9 provides excellent ventilation, and it has window covers that offer privacy without restricting air flow. The privacy is essential at campgrounds where you have neighbors. The pole sleeves do make it slower to set up the tent, but the sleeves are there for a reason. Security, stability. When you look at photos of true mountaineering tents you will see that they all have pole sleeves rather than clips to secure the tent to the poles. The sleeves help stabilize the poles to keep your tent upright in heavy winds and heavy-weight drenching rains. After the storm you will be grateful that you had pole sleeves as you observe your neighbors staring aghast at their collapsed pole-clipped tents. The Grand Manan's mesh windows have covers that tie on rather than zip on. They will not retain interior warmth on cold days, but this is consistent with many tents on the market these days that have entire walls made of mesh; however, the other tents do not offer privacy covers over the mesh. The rain fly covers all the openings including the windows to offer a layer of warmth just as other tents do. Remember to place a thin drop cloth underneath the tent next to the ground, and position it so the edges do not stick out from under the tent. I always use a heavier tarp inside the tent to cover the tent floor to protect it from boots, and to help keep it clean. Note that the photo of this tent's cousin, Grand Manan 7, is not correct. The rain fly cannot form an awning on the Grand Manan 7, at least not on the earliest versions of that model. Also, any tent manufacturer's estimate of how many people fit comfortably in any tent should be accepted with a grain of salt. Usually only one-half of that number of folks will fit comfortably, and 2 very young children count as 1 adult. I currently own 3 Eureka tents of various sizes, and I would buy the Grand Manan 9 again. (All of my tents have at least partial pole sleeves for stability.) I even recommended the Grand Manan 9 to a friend who was looking for family tent.

I bought this tent because Eureka makes one the best tents on the market and this one supports that through and through. My family has grown by 2 since the last time me and my wife went camping. We needed a tent to hold four but not take up the campsite and this one was it. What I like about it is everything. The vestibules are huge and covered very well, the ventilation is outstanding, I spent a night in it in 30 deg weather during an outing with some friends and lived to give this review, have not spent a night in the rain but the seams are sealed and the material is coated so I'm not worring about it. I also bought two full size air matresses from Coleman and they fit perrfectly with room at the foot for gear and standig up to get dressed (I'm 6'-5").

If you are looking for a great quality tent for your family buy this one and you will be quite satisfied.

One thing though I found was the door zipper was tight in one spot and the tent needed to stretch out a little, so be careful the first time you open the doors you dont damage the zipper.

I've had several tents over the years and have come up with a few must haves for a car camping tent. They include a full fly, low and high windows for proper ventilation, privacy in the form of zippered or paneled windows, and a tent I could stand in. Since I was looking for a car camping tent, weight wasn't a concern. The Grand Manan is the only tent I could find under $250 that fit my needs.



The Manan weighs in at just over 20 pounds and feels like it. The tent comes in a large stuff sack and holding it by the drawstring part of the sack made me feel like I was putting too much pressure on the sack. I will probably replace the stuff sack with a duffel bag. The packed up tent is bulky though (11"X25") and takes up more space than I expected.



I setup the tent at home before heading out on our first trip. The only problem I encountered when setting up the tent was with one of the tent sleeves. The segment of one of the sleeves at the apex of the tent is just a bit too tight and you have to force each ferrule through. It's a little frustrating because it is easy to pull the pole apart when setting up and taking down the tent. Also, the tension of the cord in the poles is very loose. Taken together setting up and taking down is a little more tedious than it should be. I will probably shorten the cord to make it tighter somewhere along the way.



The pole issue not withstanding, the construction of the tent seems to be pretty solid. The zippers work well and do not get caught up in the fabric. I am 5'9 and can easily stand in the center of the tent and walk around without hitting the roof for a few feet on either side of the tent's peak. The entire rainfly is seal seamed along with the floor of the tent. I used a small tube of Seam Grip to finish the perimeter of the tent as well as some panels on the roof. This took about 2 hours of work. I did notice that some of the stitching was a little off though. Some stitching that should have been doubled over to hide the edge of the fabric was sticking out. I don't think that it will affect the use of the tent but some stitching looked a little messy.



I first used the Manan on a two night stay at Cape Henlpen in Delaware. My fiancé and I were able to put the tent together in under 10 minutes. Having setup the tent at home really helped. One thing that is easy to overlook is that the fly has poles that have to be inserted into it before you set the fly. We used an 8X10 tarp as a footprint, with the excess two feet of tarp under one of the entrances. We used this space to store sandals and a towel to wipe our feet of sand.



I particularly enjoyed all the ways one can vent the tent. You can pull back portions of the fly to funnel air into the tent if there is a breeze or raise the sides of the fly for full ventilation. While full mesh tents are nice when backpacking, they can be a pain in campgrounds when your closest neighbor is only 50 feet away and can easily catch a glimpse of your significant other when changing. This usually means that the fly is left on 100% of the time which reduces the usefulness of all the mesh. The Manan overcomes this by using panels that are attached to the inside of the mesh windows with toggles. Want full venting? Undo two toggles and you have almost and entire wall of mesh. Need privacy? Attach the toggles. Zippered windows would have been nicer but I assume the panels are a cost cutting measure. This could be an issue during the colder months when air can rush past the sides of the panels. I doubt it will be a problem for me.



The waterproof test of tent happened on our second night when we had a full 12 hours of heavy rain resulting from the remnants of a hurricane. This was probably one of the worst case scenarios the tent will ever face. We knew it was likely to rain heavily, so we staked the tent out and guyed out the fly to some trees. About 20 minutes into the rain, I noticed some drops on the tent below the rain venting flaps. Even though it was not windy, the splashing of the rain on the fly caused some drops to splash into the tent. I closed the vent flaps and the drops stopped.



An hour later, I found a few drops dripping from the web pockets on the rain fly into the vestibule. This is where the poles are inserted in the fly to create the vestibule. This wasn't a big deal since the drops weren't coming into the tent and all we had in the vestibule were sandals. I will probably have to add seam sealer to the area around the webbing.



Finally, around 8 hours into the rain I felt pockets or water below the tent floor. Somehow water had gotten between the tarp and the tent floor. I figured the floor was waterproof enough and just ignored it. By the next day, the entire floor was wet. There weren't any puddles but the water had overwhelmed the floor and seeped into the tent.



It took a little work to figure out what went wrong. First let me say that I like using a footprint with my car camping tents. This is for cleanliness and to extend the life of the floor. I used an 8'X10' tarp so that the tarp would be smaller than 3 sides of the tent by several inches and then the long part of the tarp could be used as a door mat under the vestibule. What happened was that it was raining so much that the rain was forming small puddles where the fly met the ground. Unfortunately rain would splash off the puddles and hit the side of the tent. Fortunately they hit just an inch or two from where the mesh begins. But the rain would drip down the side of the tent and be drawn between the tent floor and the tarp. At first I blamed the tarp for the failure. But remember that the footprint Eureka offers for this tent is 9X9 and would have extended further than what I used. The only thing I can think of is that I should have tried to get the fly to come closer to the ground. I'm not sure how easily I will be able to do that next time. I don't blame Eureka for the failure but I think that the fly should probably be as long as it is in front of the doors, and touch the ground.



I am completely satisfied with the tent even though I still do not know how I will overcome the rain from dripping between the floor and tarp. It may be that if it starts to rain really hard, I will just pull the tarp out. I may even just use a tarp to protect only the area where most of out time in the tent is spent- the inner 7'X7' area. Besides sealing the webbing and possibly shortening the pole cord I think I'll be enjoying the tent for some years to come.

Overall, an excellent tent. We are very happy with it.

Positives:

- Enough space for 4; more if you want to squeeze

- Good venting options

- 2 vestibules are handy for keeping shoes etc dry outside

- fairly easy setup

- Withstood an 8 hour long deluge without a drop inside

Negatives:

- A little hard getting the poles out with one person; two people no problem

I got this tent for my wife and 2 kids. It was so easy to setup, which it's great. But it was no enought space for all of us plus backpacks and stuff. Worst than that: We had a windy night (no rain), and we were freezing inside. The air was getting in from everywhere. We felt like we were trying to sleep without a tent. So, I guess it's great to go HOT places, but else.
