I bought this tent to take on a horse trip we went on. Very easy to put up with 2 people. Very roomy. I slept in it with 2 of my daughters and all of our stuff. There was plenty of room. Loved the vestibule! Great for boots and wet cloths. I put a tarp under the tent because the ground was quite rocky and ruff and the tent floor appears to be made out of the same fabric as the tent. The tarp extended the floor under the vestibule. I liked that as it kept my stuff cleaner. (although how clean is anything really on a trip like that!) The side of the tent works great for drying out wet cloths! Almost as fast as a dryer when the sun is shining on it. Never got water in the tent-but then we lucked out somehow and it did not rain. It did hold up good in the wind. It has a good venting system. I liked being able to go in ether end of the tent. I bought this tent because my father has one and has used it on horse trips for a few years and loves his tent. Very pleased with it and can't wait to take it up aging this weekend. This time I will have all three of the girls and I am not worried at all about space or anything but having a great time!

Had previously used a few low cost store brand name tents from some of the big stores like Target and Walmart. Stepping up to this tent was huge. Very sturdy, lots of room for someone who is very tall (I'm 6'4"). I wouldn't say it's a four person tent..four adults would be cramped. But it works well for two and a little bit of gear.



The vestibule is a great feature, and you can add an optional rear vestibule. This tent will keep you warm on the chilly nights, but has good ventilation for the warmer nights. Great tent!



Super easy to set up, only takes a few minutes. Be sure to pick up a ground mat or tarp to put under the tent to help protect the tent floor.

This is the 4th Eureka tent I have purchased in 20 years (I have tents of different sizes - 2 person to 10 person) and they have all been great. This size tent is just right for 2 people, though the 2 vestibles add a little weight and bulk if you are backpacking. I like the layout and the fact that you can roll up the 2 vestibles completely in fair weather. A few days after I received the tent, I used it for a one week trip by myself including one 24 hour period of heavy rain. A few drips came through the fly and screen on the top of the tent, but really only a few over 24 hours - I didn't seam seal the fly, but I suspect that will fix the issue. The only con to this tent is the dark color which I am thinking will make the tent hotter than I would like during the summer in direct sunlight.

This tent is well designed. It has many features not mentioned in the desgription. It is well decribed as a 3+ season tent as the combination of adjustable vents and numerous tie downs make it suitable for a wide range of conditions. The large dual vestibles give weather protection for gear and they're roomy enough for putting on one's footwear. The D-shaped doors are effective for entry and exit. The dual-track zippering means you never have to struggle opening two zippers to get in and out. The door zips to the mesh screen which in turn zips to the tent, making for one zip access.



So far we are very satisfied with this tent; much more than we expected.

We purchased this tent because the floorplan is nearly identical to my husband's early 90's Quest tent which he dearly loved but it's time for it to retire, and they don't make them anymore.



We go backpacking and snow camping and wanted a tent that could do both. Most 4 season tents have so few vents that summer camping would be unbearable. So we thought this would be great. We figured with the pricetag, it had to be a decent tent, on par with MSR, NorthFace, REI, etc. right? NO, DO NOT BUY this tent if that's the quality you are seeking. It's a cheap tent, not made for "expeditions" as they claim.



The seams are sewn with a basting stitch (very easy to rip), and the only ones sealed are those on the rainfly. The fabric of the tent floor is about the same as that on the sides, and seems like if you happened to pitch it on a twig or rock, it would rip straight through in no time (it's even translucent!). The zippers are cheap, not intended for a quality rain resistant tent, and could prove to be a major source of heat loss in winter camping, since they aren't designed to seal at all. The tent weighs a whopping 11 lbs 12 oz, which is largely due to all the hooks, ropes, plastic window, etc, as well as the cotton mesh used to hold the tent poles. We thought the weight wouldn't be a problem, since his old tent is 9 lbs, but the packed size is about double what his old tent was.



When we bought this, we had already spent about 8 hours shopping for tents at local suppliers (REI and other outdoor specialty stores), and just didn't find anything that felt right layout-wise, so we went with this. The differences in construction details were ASTONISHINGLY BAD. An REI, MSR, Northface tent costs about the same and will last you for years to come. We ended up buying a MSR Mo Room 3 after this experience, and spent less $, since it was online with REIoutlet.com.



I really wanted to like this tent, since we loved the floorplan and the zip-up windows, but were just astonished to see how poor the construction quality was and how HUGE the packed tent was. Stick with the well-known brands if you are serious about "expedition" or even cold weather camping.

My wife and I have used this tent in cold winter with lots of snow and hot summer nights with lots of rain.The K2-XT has lots of venting for summer temps and will close up tightly if sub zero breezes need to be totally kept out for some reason..poor sleeping bag?The brilliant fly colour makes this outstanding tent stand out.. But for stealth camping it would be nice if manufacturers offered a choice of fly colours.The materials used by Eureka on the K2-XT are tough and look and feel top knotch.We have slept in winds over 40 mph when gusts might frighten some sane folks.We used oversized stakes.The many guyouts did their job and there was no damage to poles or tent body or fly materials.No footprint was available so I made one to fit from plastic tarp material. Happy camping!

well i do high mountain climbing quite often and never seen an eureka there, the reasons?

too heavy (compared to similar tents like the hillebergs or the ev25 from north face) and under very heavy conditions simply not tested enough, i had seen one of these rip under extreme weather on mt ranier, had to take the guys into our tent, they were not happy.

My tent? a hilleberg saiva. But this is the review of the eureka and my experience is that for cold climate is not suited I slept in one this winter and it was -22 celsius, it was like sleeping outside, with all the mesh, no heat was trapped inside and we had ice forming on the inside of the outer layer.

All in all not a tent i would recommend if you are going to use it in extreme conditions (aka I won't bet my life on it for sure).

for all other uses it might be fine but the weight is just a lot, on the other hand the price is interesting.

I own an earlier model of this tent. It is magnificent (it is also slightly more heavy duty than the current K2-XT, with the specs matching or exceeding other leading 4 season two person tents in the same class at the time).



Before I purchased it, I invested numerous hours researching Eureka, The Northface, Marmot, Helsport, and various other tent manufacturers - looking into all the info they had to offer in respect to exactly what, where, and by whom their tents and tent materials were made by. I came to discover that all of the 4 season tents offered in the American market were made entirely in Asia from Asian parts and materials. The only exception to this was Helsport, which was made and assembled entirely in Europe (and may still be).



In fact, I also came to find out that another of the big tent names used precisely the same factories in China and elsewhere across Asia, and exactly the same materials (made by the same manufacturers) to make its top end 4 season tents as did/does Eureka for their's. What other tents you might ask? Turn your face to the north and ask that question again.



Regardless, this Eureka K2 XT tent really is a wonderful piece of equipment. If you can only have one tent for two people, and expect the tent to stand up to pretty much any climate, any weather, and to last for many years even under heavy use - get this tent. However, please do be aware that it is not the lightest of shelters what that can be had, which is where dividing it up between two people's backpacks is the way to go. This is the price you pay for maximum duty materials and a spacious floor plan (the tent will sleep three adults without discomfort).



It would be nice, however, if Eureka (and others) would be so nice as to offer either choices of tent rain fly colors (the K2 XT is sun yellow, as are most tents of its 4 season nature) making available perhaps a snow field white fly and a camoflauge fly; or else if kits could be offered to alter or elsewise jazz-up one's rain fly on the tent.



But anyway, if you do make a smart choice and purchase a K2 XT tent, go ahead and get a net gear loft for the tent, and purchase some strong tent pegs, with an eye for good deals on titanium pegs on eBay.



The K2 XT is truly a fine piece of camping/mountaineering/survival equipment. The tent manufacturers missed an excellent opportunity to put themselves to the test, big time and in big ways, during hurricane Katrina. I bet if you could have dug in a bit and then staked and roped it down securely enough that a K2 XT would have survived the storm (excluding flying debris). The tent is that strong. Please understand that I am not saying to go out and put yourself in the path of a dangerous storm of that magnitude, just to see if the gear will hold up. I am simply saying that having a K2 XT tent available to you would hugely increase one's chances of surviving a storm such as Katrina, if you were caught in the wild facing such a storm.

- (SETUP) Even with instructions I was baffled with the pole configuration. I'm serious, the instructions could have been in "Pop-up book" format and I'd still have been lost! Even when I thought I had everything in place I came to find out that some sections were upside down. [When you set it up once (correctly), you'll be golden from then on and it shouldn't take but a few minutes in the future.]

- Condensation collected under the cover of the tent, but it never fell through the net-mesh.

- Great Airflow with/without the cover.

- Both entrances/exits work well and felt strong.

- Tent is solid as a drum when fully assembled.

- Stakes aren't needed unless you have the cover on.

- Plenty of privacy with the cover on.

- The net-mesh works amazing at keeping insects out and giving the occupants a panoramic approach to sleeping.

- [BACKPACKING] You can fit it all into one pack, but you might want to split it into two if you are sharing sleep space with a friend.

- [BACKPACKING] You will probably need a smaller sack to keep this tent in if your looking to save space.





FINAL THOUGHTS:





Long story short, if you need a great solid tent that can fit three bodies, plus gear, in comfort and is Backpack friendly, then this is an excellent choice.



I'd buy the Footprint for this tent. The material for the tent is plenty strong, but if your going to invest in a tent of this quality and cost, then it's better to get as much as you can out of it for future uses.

I wanted a light tent that could pass as a 2 man, (with one of the men 6'4", 260 lbs) plus 2 dogs or a tent that could accommodate 3-4 people, if necessary.



Lots of room and very comfortable head room.



Setup was easy without pouring over step-by-step instructions.



Loved the see through mesh. We took the tent to mosquitoville (early Desolation Wildnerness), and groups of us hung out in there, just to escape. Even the dogs quickly figured out it was better in the tent without the mosquitos.



I was very surprised at how rugged the mesh was. The dogs would try to get in/out by scratching at the door. I expected big claw marks in the mesh, and there were none.



The rain fly was very rugged and comprehensive and yet we did not experience any condensation.



I was kind of disappointed it didn't rain, because I wanted to see how that would turn out, but unfortunately, we had beautiful weather.

I have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog. Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear. We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow. It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.



The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent. Splitting it between two people makes even better and not at all bulky or heavy in a pack. The tent is almost entirely mesh, which my wife really likes on starry nights, with a bathtub style waterproof bottom. The rainfly is coated nylon and comes down just an inch or two shy of the ground with two vestibules, since there are two doors on the tent. It hooks in to the tent corners where the tent poles hook in, as well clips on to the poles for added stability. Setting the poles up is different than other tents I've used, but seems like it will hold up well in sub-hurricane winds. It is easier to do with two people, but it can be set up by one person if needs be. The tent doesn't have sleeves for the poles, there are just clips every foot or so which seems a little less bomb-proof than my North Face tent, but I haven't had any problems. The poles are hubbed, which also seems a bit less bomb-proof, but the major loads and stresses placed on the poles doesn't go through the hubs so I don't think it will be an issue in the future. The third less bomb-proof item is the fabric - its a little lighter and thinner than my North Face tent to save on weight and bulk. However, the poles, fabric, and clips are all very high quality, so I seriously doubt that I will have any issues with reliability or durability with this tent.



The idea to use Jake's Feet connectors, hubbed poles, and a full mesh top aren't brand new, and most of the big manufacturers buil tents this way. So I figure I won't knock the design unless I really do have a problem. Hence, it still get's 5 stars because it is a high quality, spacious, and VERY light and packable tent. Overall, I'm very pleased with the tent and expect years of service out of it without any issues.
